About this deal

Players deal 10 cards face down into a stack in front of themselves and then turn the stack over to reveal the numbers. Hard to believe that this little corker has been flying around for over 30 years but only recently did I discover its tiny boxed brilliance. So while it’s definitely a benefit to have finished your Ligretto pile it does not guarantee victory as there are plenty of points to be earnt by playing from your draw pile. This article includes a list of general references, but it lacks sufficient corresponding inline citations. It is also inspired by Dutch Blitz, [2] which was invented to teach children about colors and numbers easily.

The red box allows for four players but add the green or blue box to increase the player count to eight or even 12. Additionally, three cards (four cards in a three-player game, five cards in a two-player game) are displayed face up next to this stack; these constitute the "Row", whose numbers are also visible to players. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Simultaneously, all players try to discard as many cards of the same colour as possible from 1 to 10. You need to be fast, clever and skilful and you can combine more boxes to increase the number of players, ie 2 boxes for 8 players and 3 boxes for 12. Players can play cards from their row, the top of the ligretto stack or dealt from their hand, in sets of three.

A single Ligretto game is for 2 to 4 people, you can of course combine with other Ligrettos to cater for more people, but more on that bonkersness later. Each deck is recognised by its own distinctive symbol on the reverse side; pyramids, cubes, crystals and spheres. When one of the three cards from the Row is played, the void left behind is occupied by the top card from the Stack. As our friends own the red copy so as a group we can play with eight, but I think the most we’ve actually played at is seven and that was crazy, bonkers, awesome! The winner is the player who achieves the highest although you may choose to play a set number of rounds or first to a specific score. For a long time we played Ligretto, with the winner just being the first person to clear their Ligretto pile. A blue version of the game has been published by Playroom Entertainment for North America and other English-speaking countries since 2009.
