We trust the Zion to not slip as we scramble up scree, charge down steep muddy hills, and cross creeks and streams. I certainly wouldn’t describe the Merrell Zion GTXs as the promised land of the future of hiking, nor do I think people are wearing them in heaven.

On opening the shoebox, my first impression was that the Merrell Zion GTXs didn’t really look like hiking shoes. Thankfully, we learned better and started charging straight on through the muck, which was actually more fun anyway. They were super-comfy, waterproof, breathable and grippy, striking a nice balance between being robust and nimble. The unique fabric construction uses the laminate as the external weather barrier, with ‘film-out’ GORE-TEX® Shakedry technology ensuring maximum water repellency. And we consider the hit on longevity a reasonable tradeoff for the assurance that we’ll stay upright on a variety of terrain.The ideal pair would have a reliable membrane to keep water out, an outsole that could shed mud while gripping slick surfaces, and be comfortable enough for long days on the trail.
