Because the man/bear failed to break his curse within a year, the troll queen who placed him under the curse comes to take him to her castle "east of the sun and west of the moon," where he will be her prisoner. The family felt realistic, the distance between Rose and her mother was written beautifully, they have a strained relationship but you can feel the love Rose has for her family.This is a very visual, very detailed story that remains in the mind in vignettes much like a fairy tale. Inspired by the fairy tale East Of The Sun And West Of The Moon, North Child is mainly about two characters: Rose, the adventurous girl who was always destined to leave her family, and the mysterious white bear. This may seem unusual at first, but Pattou pulls it off with great skill and the result is that we get a rounded picture of Rose. This retelling of the Norwegian fairytale “East of the Sun and west of the Moon” was very enjoyable.
