Before embarking on a journey to find the perfect set of keycaps for your mechanical keyboard it is important to understand the difference between standard, single-shot keycaps, and double shot keycaps.

If you’ve ever noticed the keys on your keyboard slowly becoming shiny over time, they are probably made from ABS. This article will walk you through the different ways that keycaps are manufactured, and the differences between the materials most widely used, ABS and PBT. Created from superior ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) plastic, these keycaps are renowned for their high durability, smooth texture, and glossy finish.At Wooting, we use ABS UV printed keycaps, double-shot PBT keycaps, and in some occasions dye-sublimated PBT keycaps. ABS keycaps are made from Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene and are the most common keycap material used. Most commercial keyboards just don't need to last all that long, and are often replaced with more modern keyboards before they've reached the true end of their functionality. The keycaps for a full-sized keyboard are the typical standard keycap units shared across most of the layouts.

If you plan to use the same keyboard for years to come then it may make more sense to add a set of PBT keycaps that will certainly last you throughout the life of the keyboard and beyond.

Whether they are dye-sub (printed), laser-etched, or double shot, the inconsistencies in the inscriptions tend to be far less than with PBT keycaps and they tend to have a smooth, shiny, uniformed color throughout the entire set. Once the glue has been heated long enough, use a spudger (a flat plastic tool with a sharp end) or a knife to scrape underneath the feet to peel them off — be careful if using a knife!

Both ABS and PBT keycaps can be single-shot or double shot and designed for unlit or backlit and RGB keyboards. Regardless of its superior physical properties, the most PBT notable feature is its resistance to oil and chemicals, making it less likely to develop that greasy look.
