About this deal

It’s far better than the 2560 x 1080 resolution options you sometimes see in this widescreen space, giving you a large screen area to work with and a decent real estate for split screen multi-tasking. While display technologies like OLED are, and have been for quite some time, the outright dominant panel pick for color and quality in televisions, the story of OLED-backed PC monitors is one of frustrating fits and starts. If your package is delayed, the first thing you should do is check the tracking information to see if there are any updates on the status of your package. With a bit of tuning and time out of the box, the Alienware 34 QD-OLED eventually became one of the best monitors we've tested this year, and while QD-OLED may not be the "one monitor tech to rule them all" just yet, Alienware's first attempt in the space certainly earns its Editors' Choice slot.

There were some minor fluctuations in our measurements shown above but only within a range of maybe 20 cd/m 2 total. For content creators and game developers who require precise colour-critical work, the new Creator Mode feature was designed for you. Display resolution: 3440 x 1440 pixels, HD type: Quad HD, Display technology: OLED, Response time: 0. Consenting to these technologies will allow us to process data such as browsing behavior or unique IDs on this site. There is a fairly subtle 1800R screen curvature which personally we like on an ultrawide like this, it makes it a bit more comfortable and brings the edges a little closer to your field of view. The brightness setting in the OSD controls a linear relationship in terms of actual luminance output. You can adjust this device to your needs so that the upper edge of the screen is at eye level and the tilt of the screen relieves your neck muscles and eyes. Nothing too major, and this mode should be fine really for most casual users wanting to work more accurately with SDR/sRGB content, but it does lead to a few inaccuracies.

The Alienware 34 is built around Samsung's new QD-OLED panel tech, which you can read about in greater depth here. That brings us to the start of 2022 and this new set of QD-OLED panels from Samsung, which aim to challenge LG's current dominance of this niche. Somewhat of an oddity the brightness did seem to vary a little depending on the overall screen image and the APL (Average Picture Level). You won’t notice it in dynamic content, but we spotted it quite easily during static desktop use and found it a bit annoying to be honest. Beneath this RGB balance graph we provide the average correlated colour temperature for all grey shades measured, along with its percentage deviance from the 6500k target.

The text looks sharper and clearer than the LG 42C2 we had set up next to it, probably also aided by the increased pixel density of the Dell. gamma across different grey shades and ideally the grey line representing the monitor measurements should be horizontal and flat at the 2. After 1500 hours of usage you will get a pop up asking you to run this feature which takes around an hour to complete, during which time the power LED will flash red and and a coloured line will move around the screen. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. For measurement, we use a UPRtek MK550T spectroradiometer which is particularly accurate for colour gamut and colour spectrum measurements.

Blacks look inky and deep (subject to your ambient light conditions discussed more below), and you get excellent local contrast between different areas of an image. Several other software packages are incorporated including Portrait Displays’ Calman color calibration software – available from Portrait. At the top end the screen reached ~240 nits which was a little shy of the specified 250 nits from Dell but pretty close.Dell Corporation Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, FRN 778776, with limited permission to act as a credit broker. Ambient light inadvertently activates the QD layer causing this perceived drop in contrast ratio for the user. This OSD menu option allows you the flexibility to choose between the native (DCI-P3) and the sRGB colour space, depending on your work needs, and the ability to adjust the gamma settings. Pay in 3 is a form of credit, may not be suitable for everyone and use may affect your credit score.

A major reason to go with the Alienware 34 over that model, though, is the same as for many OLEDs: The panel runs cool as heck by comparison, and it is about half the poundage, to boot. Luminance, black depth and contrast ratio (static) – measuring the brightness, black depth and resulting contrast ratio of the mode being tested, whether that is at default settings or later after calibration and profiling.Dell have also had the screen certified under the ‘ VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black‘ scheme (not to be confused with the normal HDR 400 level), while also offering an additional mode which boasts a peak brightness of 1000 nits which is impressive for an OLED panel. However, now that the colour space of the screen is much closer to the target colour space of DCI-P3 the colour accuracy of those colours is much better, with a dE average of 2.
