This read mostly like the template for a film script with some serviceable artwork from Pablo Raimondi. I've always liked Dr Doom, for no other reason beyond the green cloak and the armour looking cool, really, and had a vague idea of his backstory so picked this up when I saw it on sale. Doom), and finally Doom killing the King of Latveria and taking his throne, finally completing the classic costume that we all know and love so much. This book perfectly captures every single trait of the character perfectly; from his brilliance and mastery of both science and magic, to his incredible arrogance, pride, and shear willpower. Brubaker gives us the complete origin story for this character, with the narrator being Doom himself.

And he has shown in Doom and Cap that he has a love and respect for the history of Marvel's characters. From the black steppes of Eastern Europe, to the college campuses of New York City, and finally to the throne of Latveria - this is the life of Von Doom! With the phenomenal art team of Pablo Raimondi and Mark Farmer, you will witness Doom's life from his earliest moments to the day he took the throne of Latveria. It was pretty entertaining, but only serves as a modern expansion on some ideas that had previously already been explored in Kirby's and Byrne's Fantastic Four runs.Featuring the Latverian ruler's first battle with the accursed Reed Richards and his Fantastic Four - and their most epic clashes since! There are other characters we’ve seen in Doom’s circle over the years that make appearances, but those seem to be really deep cuts. Brubaker absolutely claims Doom’s voice: “Richards’ intellect was clearly to be respected, but he was so wide-eyed about the outer planes of reality that surround us, so like a child”, or “I knew at that moment that the world lay within my grasp, that whatever Von Doom wanted it would be mine. He speculates that this was an effect of his mother's dallying with demons, which also gave her perpetually cold hands.

We also get a brief intro to Victor's future rival Reed Richards who from his perspective is one of the people that left such a mark on the tyrants life. Every page is an absolutely treat for the eyes as Pablo masterfully brings to life Brubaker’s words with stunning acclaim. A dark and revealing examination of how an innocent boy grows up to be a tyrant -- a new twist on an old legend -- BOOKS OF DOOM is a sweeping epic of tragedy, madness and destiny! I did enjoy that Brubaker chose to recount Doom’s life through interview segments, however, essentially making his book like a documentary piece – as though this had actually happened. Loved this Keith Haring toy, it engrossed my 4 year old just as much as it fascinated me - hours of fun, and it looks so good too.I expected a straight-forward narration of the story in this book, so the documentary style was an interesting surprise. was very satisfying and seemed to cover all the important bases when it comes to getting to know Victor von Doom.

If one wanted an overview of Doom's life from birth to what appears to be just before his first encounter with the Fantastic Four then you'll enjoy this.What I like about most in this title is that, not once did Brubaker ever felt the need to make it a redemption story. Overall, I think this is a good one to read if you are a Fantastic Four fan, but if you skip it, you are not really missing much either. I know I for one love books likes this that retell origin stories in comprehensive and updated forms to accommodate the ever changing mythos surrounding characters the comics we all know and love reach their 70th year in existence.
