About this deal

Przerwa' to wspaniała, osadzona w lokalnej mieszanej społeczności rdzennych Kanadyjczyków i potomków osadników, opowieść o rodzinie.

The Break is a powerful, persuasive novel about the strength and love that bind these women to each other and to the men in their lives. Prior, whose documentary photographic practice is rooted in the street, found himself stalking the once-bustling commercial districts of his city, absorbing the moment when conventional ideas around daily life, from the personal to the political, were upended and a global dialogue emerged around health, welfare, race, civil rights, the economy, and ultimately the future. Sablés, wafer rolls, puff pastry, cookies, crocants, biscuits, carquinyolis, wafers, speculoos, baklavas, linzer, cigarellos, grissines, tiles. Crimes involving "Nates" (natives) are ho-hum, routine occurrences to Officer Christie, Scott's older, white, police partner. Men come and go, taking responsibility for each family they start for as long as it suits them, tied more, it appears, to a sense of responsibility for themselves. And I just didn't think she needed the POV from a dead woman - although these were some of the most beautifully written passages, they distracted me and constantly pulled me out of the story. This makes for a pretty toxic environment for the women, one which they survive through sheer bloody-minded determination. As well as capturing when staff start and end the working day, this book also captures the times your staff sign out and back in during their lunch break. Katherena Vermette rendered the women of the North End gorgeous in her poetry: North End Love Songs. There is a twist re the perpetrator in The Break which I’d rather not discuss but it is quite shocking, all very deftly handled.

The lives of the girls and women in The Break are not easy, but their voices — complex, urgent, and unsparing — lay bare what it means to survive, not only once, but multiple times, against the forces of private and national histories. Ihr Roman ist einerseits augenöffnend und lenkt den Fokus auf ein Thema, mit dem ich mich bisher eher sporadisch beschäftigt habe. It was necessary for me, as a Canadian, to read a story about my country from a perspective that is different than my own. The result is a book that is at times emotionally demanding, funny, suspenseful, and always engaging.

Presented in a broadsheet newspaper format, Amen Break looks outward from a decisive year to contemplate what comes next. It was the worst idea ever to admit my news to Maura, but she has a knack for getting the truth out of people. Each chapter is narrated by or told from the perspective of a single character, with links slowly growing between them.
