In Britain the first sightings are usually in July, and these lovely butterflies continue to arrive from the continent through August and September, with a few individuals being seen as early as the end of January or early February and as late as the beginning of December in years when the winter weather is unusually mild. It is thought that butterflies fresh from hibernation do not migrate and hence the assumption is that spring sightings in the British Isles are of individuals which arrived the previous year and successfully hibernated in this country. Nettle was not appreciated by the larvae, not being touched by them during the last two or three stages; only when first hatched did they feed upon it; although they lived upon nettle for several days they did not thrive, and eventually died, while almost without exception all the other larvae, about 2,000, throve and pupated which had fed on the other food named.

The adult is a solitary insect and, as such, migrates singly rather that in the swarms associated with other migrant species. This lovely butterfly is often the first to appear in springtime the 'Wild West' states of America, where it is sometimes seen flying over the last of the winter snow.
