Beryl Markham was an amazing woman whose fierce independence and bravery predated the woman's movement by more than half a century. Paula McLain's new historical fiction, Circling the Sun is the story of Beryl Markham, an aviatrix whose incredible flight accomplishments took a back seat to the more famous Amelia Earhart. Circling the Sun is based on the true story of Beryl Markham, a young Englishwoman who became the first person to fly across the Atlantic from England to North America.

she crashes "three hundred yards from the water's edge, nowhere near New York" but then says she has "done it". The luscious writing of this novel will transport you to the dry rolling hills of Kenya and quench your thirst after a long drought. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged.

This story has a canvas as broad as the plains of Africa and with as many characters as there are species of animals in Africa.

In the end, I honestly think I could listen to this one all over again, taking me back to my trance, and loving it as it's the first time I've heard it. The narrator was perfect, adding to this dreamlike story that I was so into that when my husband came into the kitchen shouting 'what time is dinner' it was like screeching tires drawing me out of my trance. there was a tale about a guy who was going out on safari and told the guy to "turn the lorry round" because he "had to see about a girl".
