Brian Alderson, 'Edward Ardizzone: a preliminary hand-list of his illustrated books, 1929–1970', in The Private Library; 2nd series, 5:1 (1972 Spring), pp. He also illustrated a re-telling of the Don Quixote story for children by James Reeves and his illustrations for The Land of Green Ginger by Noel Langley are regarded as classics in their own right. Edward Wadsworth A major figure in British art of the first half of the twentieth century, Edward Wadsworth was a painter, printmaker, draughtsman and muralist.

Here he was taught by Sir William Rothenstein, before becoming Rothenstein’s personal studio assistant. He attended school from the age of seven for at least two years, and at the age of nine – or such was his claim – he may have been employed as cabin boy to the fishermen working the waters off the Cornish coast.

By 1939 Ardizzone was regularly holding one-man exhibitions at the Bloomsbury Gallery and, later, the Leger Gallery. One of his happiest collaborations was that with Eleanor Farjeon, especially on The Little Bookroom (Oxford, 1955 collection). Edward Ardizzone [1900-1979] – universally known as ‘Ted’ – was born in Haiphon, French Indo-China (now Vietnam) to a father of Italian extraction and an English mother. Ardizzone's first major commission was to illustrate an edition of In a Glass Darkly by Sheridan Le Fanu in 1929.The meticulous draftmanship insisted on by Tonks stood his pupils in good stead, and two of Shephard’s contemporaries, Coldstream and Rodgers, with whom he shared more than one group-show, founded the Euston Road School of Drawing and Painting in 1937.
