Even when facing his probable death, one of his chief concerns was the commercial exploitation of the story of the Endurance. The author interviewed survivors of the ill-fated 1914 expedition to Antarctica and also used some of their diaries as his source material. The author also renders an excellent picture of the day-to-day life of these people, including how the men live, pass the time, and work to keep their spirits up when not on the seas. He achieved a certain amount of acclaim when South, his own account of the Expedition, was published, but his legend seemed to die with him when he suffered a fatal heart attack on another trip south in 1922.It is a battle against a tireless enemy in which man never actually wins; the most that he can hope for is not to be defeated.

The story of Shackleton’s voyage captured my imagination the first time I heard it as a girl, and revisiting one of my favourite expedition stories with Alfred Lansing’s book seemed particularly fitting. This was a gripping tale, made all the more poignant because it is true, and a well-narrated treat on audible. He tells the story without hyperbole or excess melodrama and lets the reality of the tale provide all of the drama and tension.Conditions delayed them for at least one month before they set sail on December 5th, nearly the official start of summer in Antarctica. On the one hand, there are things that can be captured on film that just can't be expressed in words. Lansing interviewed survivors in 1959 with the most significant contribution from Dr Alexander Macklin, diaries were made available, but Shackleton got all his men to keep a personal diary if they didn't already. Saving your own skin in a difficult situation could be admirable resourcefulness, but it's not the best illustration of heroism.
