About this deal

When the North Western Railway was nationalised and became part of British Railways in 1948, Topham Hatt was made Controller of the railway. They were both at fault and as a result deserved a good scolding, (the cleaner who meddled with Thomas, was probably fired on spot and the trucks well they were destroyed, hey this is Sodor, trucks committing suicide isn’t something new). Sir Lowham Hatt is the jolly twin brother of Sir Topham Hatt, the son of Dowager Hatt, the great-uncle of Stephen and Bridget Hatt, and the brother-in-law of Lady Hatt.

Dowager Hatt lives on Sodor and in her first appearance in a TV episode ("Gordon and the Gremlin"), her son held a party for her. Yes he is strict, yes he is firm and yes he will put his foot down if his engines test his patience, but he cares for his engines, he’ll reward them when they are heroes and nothing is more important to him than his engines. That being said, he also shows a distinctly more fatherly side to his engines like his father Sir Edward Hatt. And yet despite everything the Fat Controller is probably the most slandered character in the franchise, earning heavy criticism from the media and some petty ones from the fandom. But despite everything our parents looked after us, cared for us, nurtured us and wouldn’t allow anything bad to happen to us. Because contrary to what others believe, the Fat Controller has provided his engines with what they truly desire. Heritage Railway staff tell Thomas the Tank Engine fans told to refer to the Fat Controller as Sir Topham Hatt.

The best way to think about it is that controllers handle input, models contain data -- but, of course, that's simplified. Let’s compare and contrast the scene in Lady Hatt’s Bday where Thomas looks shocked to see his controller in such a mess, and honestly feels quite sorry for him to Buckled Tracks and Bumpy Trucks where Thomas, Gordon, Toby and the passengers just bully him for wearing a safari hat or the worst episode ever where Thomas and his grandchildren laugh at his boxer shorts, it is so uncomfortable to watch. Though when we were young we questioned why as adults we understand that it was our parents wanting us to not go down a bad path. This according to many fans in the best season for Sir Topham Hatt, he maintains his strict fair disciplinarian and rewarding persona from the books and the first four seasons, my personal favourite moments are when he sternly reminds James of his place, “ Really Useful Engines Don’t Argue”, when he reprimands Henry in SITA, “ Engines don’t swim Henry, you were meant to deliver fish not swim with them” and when he thoughtfully looks on at the boulder, “ We should’ve left this part of the Island alone. these pads allow you to cook your meat whilst preventing fat flare up, soaking up fat from sausages, bacon, burgers and more.

With that said, if the gurus are gonna preach the almighty state of thin controller-hood, we first have to understand why a fat controller is a code smell, what thin really means, and why it benefits us. She is the only household member to originate in the TV series, never having appeared in the Railway Series books.

Personally the most absurd one was someone once saying how they couldn’t understand him being angry at Henry in SITA, even as a toddler, I knew this was a fair telling off.

He never gets severely scolded for fucking around in the first act of TGR or when he steals James’ train in JBS Sir Topham’s seems blissfully unaware. Our software changes rapidly, so good code is code that is easy to change and code that is not so easy to break.

He is in his mid 60s (as evident in a newspaper article in the Great Discovery), although his voice in the UK versions sometimes hints at old age. Stephen Topham Hatt lives on the Island of Sodor, and regularly has outings and holidays with his grandparents and sister. The first use of the name Sir Topham Hatt in the TV series comes in the episode 'The Sad Story of Henry' when the narrator ( Ringo Starr in both UK version and the first US version and George Carlin in the second US version) introduces him to the audience. Two new female characters were added to the show, bringing the number of female engines at Tidmouth Sheds to three out of the seven total characters.
