About this deal

Mick Fortney and his partner Leeds manage to cruise above the standard police stress-pools of coffee and Pepto-Bismol--they're water cops in the "Club Harbor Unit," manning a patrol boat on San Diego's Mission Bay. Espada has dedicated himself to the pursuit of social justice and fighting for the rights of Latino/a communities. If you can imagine the ghosts of Allen Ginsberg and Pablo Neruda conversing in a spit-and-sawdust Puerto Rican bar, you have the tone of this collection. Espada is a professor in the Department of English at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where he teaches creative writing and the work of Pablo Neruda. Wambaugh does not spare in-depth description of the topics he covers The story focuses on the intense rivalry between nations competing for the America Cup and the lengths some will go to win it.

If you have a sudden onset or increase in floaters, flashes or any vision loss then you should book an eye test immediately. I am reminded of Carolyn Forché’s famous poem ‘The Colonel’ written in 1978 when she spent months in El Salvador during its civil war. When introducing characters and during dialogue, the reader is also often given information regarding what gang said character is affiliated with. What a gift to be able to express love, admiration, and loathing for other people through poetry like this! It’s a randy cuppie named Blaze who tweaks their cop instincts thatsomething’s not quite right on the waterfront—and it’sBlaze who sets off a bizarre criminal trail that wouldbe hilarious if it didn’t wind up just as nasty asit gets, with a pair of murders right on the eve of thebiggest sailing race of all.As a person who remembers well that America's cup (being a kiwi) it was interesting reading a novel set in San Diego at that time. Unless you are deeply interested in sailing, in particular in America Cup sailing, this novel will likely be more than you ever wanted to know about these topics, dressed up as a police procedural. Indeed, Blaze will soon lead Detective Anne Zorn and Mick Fortney along a bizarre criminal trail that would behilarious if it didn't wind up just as nasty as it gets, with a pair of murders right on the eve of the biggest sailing race of all.

They drink the brown water, waiting for microscopic monsters in their bellies to visit plagues on them. The bodies of Salvadoran migrant Oscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez and his nearly 2-year-old daughter Valeria lie on the bank of the Rio Grande in Matamoros, Mexico, on June 24, 2019, after they drowned trying to cross the river to Brownsville, Texas. In “Aubade With Concussion,” the poet’s wife slips on ice, smacks her head, wakes up and drives herself to school, where a student awaits—sleepless since her boyfriend’s murder. The plot does have a nice twist at the end, but it wasn't worth the trouble of getting there, at least for me. At the end of the volume, there are extensive notes that provide background on themes of some poems, as well as the inspiration for various poems. Perhaps I am too-biased in coming into poetry and art with the idea that it will provide an aesthetic experience, which in a way can't be too-much based on what we perceive to be reality.
