About this deal

But living with Piers' grandmother, who brings with her all her maids and servants that she couldn't possibly live without thus creating havoc below the stairs with the Carey's lifelong loyal housekeeper and cook, Hester. The construction most often was appealing, but like the convoluted plot, seemed to complicate itself unnecessarily. Consenting to these technologies will allow us to process data such as browsing behaviour or unique IDs on this site. Only a closely-guarded secret will convince Rosalind she can trust Piers to protect her family - and her fragile heart. Also, I have a real issue when people in relationships ice out their partner, it's just a button with me, so as Lila tries to face her demons alone, I just wanted to shake her.

The novel is much concerned with the rituals of accepting loss and death, the ways that people find to renew their strength and then go on. The plots were just completely implausible, and they could have been really good if thought out better. And the attempts to connect and reconnect, even when they don't want to, show their desire to overcome the pain of the past and move into a more functional future. She is married with two grown-up children and four grandchildren, and now lives in Dorset on the beautiful Jurassic Coast with her husband.

It is such a shame because I thought it was going to be so good and for me actually a bit different compared to Dilly's other books. Years later, when tragedy strikes, Rosina runs away to join a theatrical troupe and her natural talent for singing wins the hearts of the crowds. What is going on, It is known that Pirates use the waters, but is Rockwood castle hiding deep dark secrets?

This scene, which gives the book its essential power, is echoed by Rae's pregnancy and impending labor, which is also associated with natural cataclysm, in this case with an earthquake that threatens the city of Los Angeles.Whilst in London, Rosalind is introduced to Piers Blanchard who informs them that he has a claim to Rockwood going back centuries in which Rockwood was the rightful home to the Blanchards. That being said, I fear that maybe that fire has grown too bright, so I have turned reading into more of a chore than a leisure activity so I'm going to downgrade it a little and see if it changes how I feel about the books I have read. Until the dashing Piers Blanchard appears on their doorstep from Cornwall, claiming that he is the rightful owner of Rockwood Castle. Absolutely loved this story, I read a review on here that said it was rubbish, as I was reading I kept thinking about the review, I can’t believe we were reading the same book, top marks as usual Dilly.

In the end, I wish there were some more loose ends that were tied, up, but it was really an enjoyable read overall. when an autopsy was performed the oddest things were found in its stomach: a silk scarf; small bones, which had not yet been identified; blue water the color of sapphires; three gold rings. Magical realism is usually my jam, but I found these elements this time around to be forced and, well, kind of annoying. p>Read about how we’ll protect and use your data in our Privacy Notice. This contemporary world is set against a series of Russian folktales told by an old woman who lives at the edge of Manhattan, in a place so well hidden it can only be found once in a lifetime. Until the day comes when the dashing Piers Blanchard appears on their doorstep from Cornwall, claiming he is Rosalind’s distant cousin and that Rockwood Castle is his. It's all real, but it also has a fantastical element because some of the women in the book believe they can see into the future or feel things so deeply from the past that the past is still alive to them.
