A lot of the actions let you gain something: tools, workers, and resources are the main things that you will gather over the course of the game. Even if you get what you want in Spring it doesn’t mean that supporting tiles will come out in the other seasons or that you’ll be able to win the auction for the tiles that you were hoping to pick up. KttCL takes that away from you and limits the engine you can build to either single level or a pretty simple two level engine, but even that takes you such a long time to build that its a challenge to fully utilize it. However if you don’t get the tile to turn something you’ve been collecting into points then they will get wasted.These should be carefully constructed using the separate chimneys pieces to lock the walls and roofs into place. In spring, summer, and autumn, more workers will arrive on board the Keyflower and her sister boats, with some of these workers possessing skills in the working of the key resources of iron, stone, and wood. Granted, this is not a common situation; I did, however, play a game where only one of these tiles was drawn - and that one was drawn in the last possible season. Overall I think KttCL has less of a runaway leader effect and all players are still in the game, but that is due to the level of strategy available in the game.

The lack of green keyples in KttCL removes a layer of strategic depth and variability from Keyflower, but it also makes the game more approachable. Bidding pilgrims are placed on the edge of the hexagonal tile on the side you are facing so each player knows what they have bid regardless of colours (I really like this feature). Yes, third level upgrades were added in Keyflower: The Merchants, and yes they are an awesome addition that adds a lot of crunch to the game. Place the relevant boat tiles in a row at the edge of the playing surface, with the side indicating the number of players face up, and the orientation facing the center of the playing surface.

Any ,white' workers generated are taken randomly from the bag and placed behind the player's screen. If you want to play Keyflower with new players KttCL provides gameplay which is close to Keyflower, but much more approachable in terms of strategy and learning the mechanisms. Instead of having new tiles for the market, each player will pick at least 1 winter tile from their hands, and put them in the market for bidding. In Autumn there are tiles that provide a large point bonus for upgrading or storing resources on them.
