Since Audeze introduced the LCD-X in 2013, it has become the Gold standard of the professional audio world. It’s very easy to distinguish sources panned only a few degrees apart, yet there is none of the artificial width you get in some high-end dynamic headphones.

The open-back EL8s add to this mix a frequency response that is as flat as any dynamic headphones I’ve ever heard, making them a compelling choice for mixing duties.Desire to learn and share knowledge of science required as is 20 years of participation in forums (not all true). They were useful well after I had finished a mix to my satisfaction on monitor speakers, or when I would later hear the mastered version. LCD-X fits really well with ear cups that encompass the whole ear and ear pads that are extremely well padded for the ear to not touch the driver assembly and remain comfortable for hours.The LCD-X’s were stunning in presenting the range and sonic transparency of what we needed to hear for confidence we were on the right track. The ear cups, grill, headband and headband adjusters are all made of metal, while the ear pads and suspension are made of high quality leather - which are extremely comfortable, breathe quite well and don't feel sticky even on hot days. LCD-X is sensitive enough to be driven directly by portable players like iPods, iPhones, and better smartphones. The earpads are designed with specially-crafted foam offering perfect firmness and absolute acoustic balance.

These are far and away the heaviest headphone I have ever worn, and the old headband design puts a lot of that weight on the center of my head. The XTC-O feels a little more ‘full’ sounding than the LCD-X, likely due to the increased low end and smaller soundstage.

Obviously it’s a matter of seconds to push them back in, but it’s annoying if it happens at a crucial moment. Additionally, the magnets array has been reworked to reduce the weight of the headphone, while maintaining the highest possible quality. Headphone measurements by definition are approximate and variable so don't be surprised if other measurements even if performed with the same fixtures as mine, differ in end results.
