About this deal

It was a direct swap, no need to dismantle the cistern just twist out the old body (I had to twist mine CLOCKWISE) and fit the new one. Inspect the large rubber washer on the base, has it fallen off; is it caked in limescale or other crud; inspect (for limescale) the edges of the base that has remained in the cistern. Faulty or damaged toilet fill valves can cause a toilet not to function properly and can waste water. For those who are wondering if this will replace the now out of production AFV40100 or AFV40200, the answer is YES it will! this is the cistern with the top off and you can see where the wire comes through and goes between those 2 white bits of plastic(which are cylindrical) but i can't work out how it holds it together?

The trouble is that the pully /plunger assembly is on 2 guide rails on the inside of the unit and it gets stuck and gravity can't pull it closed after you press the button. When I got the valve off I looked at the seal itself which seemed to be very clean and pliable but it was covered in bubbles which I thought was a bit odd. Although on my flush the smaller level indicator on the side of the unit was the trouble as it was sticking and preventing the plunger from going down far enough, you can ensure it is operating ok by making sure the that the bottom of the plunger is down a good 1 ins from the unit casing, if not it means the plunger is still sticking and the water will still run thru it into the toilet pan,so just make sure its 1 ins . I have tried to remove the this valve but it is so fixed, I am reluctant to force it in case I damage it.

I would like to have got down into the bottom assembly and taken it all apart but I couldn't work out how to do it but that would be a plan B for anyone who still can't get the thing to work with WD40. I've looked around t'internet and it would seem the water running would be down to a problem with the flush valve.PLEASE NOTE CERTAIN PARTS OF SCOTLAND, IRELAND and the ISLE of MAN will not be next day if chosen and will take an extra day. somhairle wrote:The cistern top simply lifts off but the attached hose prevents it from being set aside. Inside you will see its a very, very basic design with what is effectively a bicycle brake cable from the push button unit, pulling on a little pully device which lifts the plunger at the base. When I came to put the valve back on I sussed out why there was sealant, as with everything else in this house a bodge has taken place due to them breaking a lug off one side.

turn the valve 1/4 of a turn will dismantle the top of the valve from the base so you can gain access to the seal at the base. In your first picture there is a big white bit and a big blue bit, you need to replace the big white bit, there is a seal at the bottom which has perished. My unit was difficult to get out of the cistern, but when i gave it a really hard twist ,which was maybe a bit more than a 1/4 turn it popped out easier, its easy peasy to get it back into its cradle that stays in the cistern. At this point all i did was squirt in plenty of WD40 and keep activating the little leaver with a pencil untill the cable is freed by the WD40. I took off the cistern lid and poked around but couldn't make much sense of the workings - all the valves etc seem to be well hidden inside the plastic fittings and the way to remove them for inspection didn't seem obvious. And when it comes to turning the whole body of the valve, I said anti-clockwise - but looking at your pictures it could be clockwise. When you say the big white bit is that the top of the tube closest to me that the blue tube goes in to?

the little leaver will probably be stuck in the down position, if so poke in to lift it back up, this will let the valve reset and the systen should fill up. I have a dual flush button and cable, bottom fill valve in my cistern and it occasionally sticks open allowing the water to continue to drain out the cistern. It can be put back in several positions, which allows you to adjust how tight the cable is when the button is pushed.
