Personalised advertising may be considered a “sale” or “sharing” of information under California and other state privacy laws, and you may have a right to opt out. If you have any interest in learning more about Psilocybin mushrooms, without fluff and woo-woo, then How To Change Your Mind is a great place to start. Highly recommend them if you’re into flashcards, nerding out on mushrooms, and improving your identification of bolete species. The book goes into detail about each aspect of the mushroom, Stem, Flesh, Tubes/Gills/Pores/Teeth, Spores, Habitat and Edibility, as well as offering advice on the best way to prepare and even preserve the mushroom.

Don't make this your only reference source when determining if a mushroom is edible or not (best to keep a bigger, more exhaustive book at home; and look things up online too), but it'd be hard to find a better one to take into the wood with you. Due to the large number of species listed, there aren’t as many photos as one would like, but that’s a common problem with all printed guides – there isn’t space for all the pictures while also including an exhaustive number of species. They’re not for the total mushroom novice but an incredible tool for the novice itching to become a smarty-pants. Here you will usually be led by an experienced expert who can show you first hand the important features of each species as well as their particular ecology.

The more straightforward mushroom identification books in this list are excellent for what they are and so are the super complicated detailed ones. It goes deep into the ways that mushrooms are grown commercially all over the world, some of the major trends in mushroom cultivation, and ways that mushroom growers are overcoming problems and becoming more efficient. Do you have any other suggestions for resources that might be helpful to fellow mushroom enthusiasts? The writing style is fun and light-hearted, with clear photographs accompanying each species, The book provides vital information on habitat, seasonality, taste, and cooking preparation. This book contains all of the mushroom species from our first book, the Wild Food UK Foraging Pocket Guide, plus an additional 100 more!

Could equally apply to either, although I was referring to the latter; I don't like it, its just not one that I've ever found useful. Some wild mushrooms, like the highly poisonous death cap, which can be mistaken for edible varieties, are toxic. There are seasonal charts listing the times of year you can expect to find the 122 edibles featured! Invest in trustworthy field guides or mushroom identification apps to aid you in accurately recognising mushrooms. Have you looked over the book “Fruits of the Forest: A Field Guide to Pacific Northwest Edible Mushrooms” by Daniel Winkler, by chance? While purchasing a book can provide a foundation, responsible foraging requires a comprehensive understanding that goes beyond reading. Considering there are thousands of mushrooms in North America, this book only covers the very basics, but that’s one reason it’s so great. The detailed, desk-reference-ness of the book is undeniable and especially valuable since it is written clearly and not in scientific myco-lese terminology.

Of course, there are some dangerous fungi out there, so knowing how to identify the edible varieties of mushrooms is absolutely critical. This book is well written and comprehensive, and is a must-have resource for those interested in the topic. I have written it as a narrative, in current TV parlance as a ‘journey’, beginning with the extraordinary diversity of fungi and the ways in which they exploit the natural world to the history of the fungus foray and the controversy over gathering wild mushrooms for the pot. This foraging guide is designed to help identify edible mushrooms (fungi) and their poisonous lookalikes growing in the UK. It seems every forager thinks they can create a mushroom foraging book — there are so many self-published guides online.
