William Joyce does a lot of stuff—films, apps, Olympic curling—but children’s books are his true bailiwick (The Numberlys, The Man in the Moon, Nicholas St. I'm just about a third of the way though this but am enjoying it thoroughly and looking forward to hand-selling this. Under the right circumstances a toy can become so very much more than something to be played with or amused by. Even if you're not into this kind of thing, you can't deny that Joyce does an excellent job taking a familiar concept and making it his own.On the soundtrack, the Norwegian band, Hayde Bluegrass Orchestra, performed the cover of the Everly Brothers' version of All I Have to Do is Dream. He was shuffled from room to room through the maze of hallways that made up the hospital where he was born. Was Billy correct in thinking that leaving a trail of toys behind was safer than the crumbs that Hansel and Gretel used to help them find their way home?

It was a lovely doll, and the first time she’d ever held it, the name popped into her head and somehow seemed perfect. The ruler of this kingdom is Zozo, a former carnival-game clown doll whose heartbreaking backstory is the stuff of tragic opera. Anyway, while I didn't exactly fall in love with it, my 8 year old loved it, and I think that's what matters most.
