About this deal

Since 2001, we've brought you uncompromising, candid takes on the world of film, music, television, video games, theater, and more. They are: An American Werewolf in London (1981), Come Drink with Me (1966), To Sleep So As To Dream (1986), RoboCop (1987), and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994). Such a theme can’t be laughed off as a trope, as it continues to be a selling point for carny politicians even as the nation’s crime rate drops.

Going the extra mile, whilst the 4K restoration may have been done a few years back, the additional director's cut footage has been remastered to match up and looks pretty damn good as a result. This notion, of the government funding killers to suit its own means, suggests too many Reagan-era controversies to count. Additionally, fans have noted connections to Japanese manga and various tokusatsu superhero series (RoboCop himself bears an uncanny resemblance to Space Sheriff Gavan, in particular), though I’m not sure this particular connection has ever been substantiated by the creators. Not notch transfer and I like the plastic j card which was easy to remove from the steelbook itself. There are fluctuations, sure - the composited stop-motion animation leaving any live background action looking softer and poorer in quality, and that aforementioned grain varying as a result - but these are relatively brief and understandable instances where the effects of the time leave any 2022 transfer as only highlighting these inherent limitations.

Robocop is one of the greatest movies of all time, brutal, prescient, bitingly satirical, violently satisfying, blisteringly lean and utterly unforgettable. What appears to be their first foray into Atmos tracks should be commended for its restraint and faithfulness to the original sound design, although that hardly makes it a demo effort in any respect, and the extras may well be just a port of their earlier Blu-ray set's extras, but it's excellent and comprehensive nonetheless, leaving this the definitive way to own this masterpiece. Beyond those Limited Edition extras, the package itself is excellent and utterly comprehensive although - as is now standard for Arrow - there is a question mark over whether it offers anything that fans won't already have from their Arrow Blu-ray set (and what fans don't own that? The Improvements also include the Director’s cut footage, which on previous Blu-ray releases that I’ve owned had clearly not been remastered.

According to specs, Arrow’s transfers were taken from MGM’s own 2013 4K scan of the original R-rated camera negatives. Those of us that saw the movie back in 1987 will have a love for the theatrical cut that we were treated to, this Director’s Cut is the one that many of you who never saw the movie on the big screen will know about the cut as it’s usually the one that is on the Blu-ray releases of RoboCop, there are some extra extended scenes that increase the violence and gore, plus a slight comedy element that during my screening had a good few fans laughing loudly. Suffice it to say that there’s an enormous amount of bonus content found here, with a big batch of new extras that were created for the 2019 release along with a lot of legacy content that was ported over too. As RoboCop’s memories of his former life as Murphy resurface, only his ex-partner (Nancy Allen, Dressed To Kill) stands beside him to fight against the vicious thugs responsible for his death, as well as a nefarious top-level OCP executive orchestrating the chaos from above. Ok, i’m biased - Robocop was one of the first 18/R rated films that I ever saw, and has remained in my personal top 10 all-time favourite movies ever since.
