About this deal

It's possibly director Sergio Martino's most ambitious film from a period when he produced a series of excellent pictures. Jan Reyna is a murder squad detective, British by adoption and choice, Faroese by birth and history.

It was a sort of cross between country-drunk and MGM's idea of hula-hula music -- just right for Yorkshire, right? This one is "all the colors of darkness" not only for the mystery or the victims, but also for Banks himself. A group of children playing in the woods in the Yorkshire Dales discovers a man's body hanging from a tree. Banks and Annie keep pursuing a non-existent case even though they both agree no crime has been committed and they have no goals for the investigation other than finding out some information they don't know but that they have no reason to believe is of any importance beyond satisfying curiosity. He theories of the investigation are that this has been caused by a third party spreading rumours and innendo which results in the catasphoric events that take place. It goes on and on and on about how rooms look (that have absolutely zero to do with the story at any point), what he is eating, if his fork has a stain on it left from the dishwasher and so on. Nestled among the Snowdonia mountain range, Llanfair looks to Constable Evans like a town forgotten by time, but he quickly learns that even the bucolic countryside has its share of eccentric - and deadly - characters. In fact, there is quite an air of desperation around banks as everything gets fucked up around him as he does his job.

The Superintendent, Queen of stating the obvious in previous novels, suddenly becomes an omnipotent genius, far above Banks or Annie's ability to understand or fathom. Now his own words about the victim’s latest production, Othello, come back to haunt him: “jealousy, betrayal, envy, ambition, greed, lust, revenge—all the colours of darkness. Cassandra Dewell can’t leave Montana’s Lewis and Clark County fast enough for her new job as chief investigator for Jon Kirkbride, sheriff of Bakken County. In which, what in the face of it looks like a suicide, after the murder of a gay couple, turns into a world of paranoia and conspiracy, when it is revealed that one of the victims is a former MI6 agent.

It was thought provoking that someone who produced the situation in which crimes were committed might not actually have committed any crime. A beautiful June day in the Yorkshire Dales, and a group of children are spending the last of their half-term freedom swimming in the river near Hipswell Woods. The body hanging from a tree in a peaceful wood appears to Detective Inspector Annie Cabbot to be a suicide.
