About this deal

After much campaigning in Ireland, in 2023, the 1st of February will become a public holiday in honour of our Brigid. It is often displayed above doorways or in windows, and it is sometimes used in rituals or ceremonies for healing and warding off negative energy. As Saint Brigid sat by his bedside, the chieftain’s curiosity was piqued by the woven rushes strewn across the floor. As the daughter of the mighty god Dagda, Brigid occupied a significant position among the Tuatha Dé Danann. If you want to make a cross that will last, you will need to use stems that have already been dried and soak them for a short while beforehand.

Brigid's cross is named for Brigid of Kildare, the only female patron saint of Ireland, who was born c. Taking up the tradition in its many forms focuses the mind in the meditation of craft, and connects our winter minds mad at the cold to the great wheel that turns and is slowly bringing us into the spring of renewal. Really any material that is thin, somewhat strong (so the cross doesn't fall over on itself) and flexible (so it can be woven).Kildare, but her remains were exhumed during the time of the Viking raids along the east coast of Ireland and brought to Downpatrick, where she rests alongside Saints Patrick and Columcille at Down Cathedral. Popular legend tells us that she was the daughter of Dagda, who belonged to the Tuatha De Danann, a race of people who were the island’s first inhabitants. There was an old pagan Chieftain who lay delirious on his deathbed in Kildare (some believe this was her father) and his servants summoned Brigid to his beside in the hope that the saintly woman may calm his restless spirit. In March 2008, the monks began preparing Sanctuary Skin Cream, a moisturising hand and skin cream which contains a blend of organic oils, beeswax, cocoa butter and aloe vera juice.

Here, is a more complicated St Brigid’s Cross – a diamond cross made with rushes twisted onto willow twigs. The origins of Brigid’s Cross can be traced back to pre-Christian Ireland and the ancient festival of Imbolc where communities would gather to honour Brigid with songs, dances, and offerings. May the blessing of God and the Trinity be on this cross and where it rests and on everyone who looks at it. If you don’t have access to common rush, just experiment with what you have – paper drinking straws would work really well.To enable personalised advertising (like interest-based ads), we may share your data with our marketing and advertising partners using cookies and other technologies. Brigid’s Day is primarily celebrated in Ireland, but it is also observed in other countries with Irish heritage or Catholic communities, such as Scotland, England, the United States, and Canada. The weaving of Brigid's crosses was popular throughout Ireland, particularly in the north and midland, but its popularity dwindled during the 20th century.
