The second part is reminiscent of the story The History of the Curry Sausage, a highly successful German book about a woman who has a passionate romance and hides a man and does not tell him that the war has ended. The female protagonist, particularly, begins as a victim, but soon she, too, becomes ugly and horrible. There is the atmospheric description of wartime life in Austria, where people try to carry on as normal in face of food shortages, air-raids and public hanging. SH: There are times in the book, when Elsa treats him with disrespect (the way an older girl would treat a younger boy), that I feel for him. I gave it a last try but could never move the bow straight the way Ute showed me; and it ended up touching the bridge, the wall, someone's eye.The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Book Thief, The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas – all are brilliant books that give us a glimpse into the Jewish experience during WWII. She longs for her fiancée, Nathan, she feels gratitude towards Johannes’ parents, then guilt when he loses them because of her, her survivor guilt only made worse by the idea that she might not have risked her life to save anyone herself, as his parents have. J, the main character of the plot, stands for all those kids who were deprived of a healthy youth, to become war freaks — slaves of a crazy political regime! I loved a pink kangaroo twice my size that I troubled to drag around but didn't love the cigar someone stuck in my mouth, or so I conclude because I was crying. This gripping, masterful work examines truth and lies at both political and personal levels, laying bare the darkest corners of the human soul.

I discovered I was tuning out the narrator in an effort to avoid feeling down and considered quitting. The spoilt arrogant Aryan teenager develops and grows before our eyes – but not in ways you might expect of a hero-saviour of a vulnerable young girl.

If I took its death harder than I had my sister's and grandfather's, it was only because I was older — old enough to understand I'd never see it or them again. His mouth was determined, his face tense, his nose straight and severe, his eyebrows knotted irritably, and his eyes focused on something not present to a degree that nothing would divert him, or me either as long as I was with him.
