About this deal

Our tendency to put up a U87 or even an SM7B ahead of a KM84 when a singer walks into the live room is probably driven as much by habit as by genuine sonic preference — or perhaps by the unconscious expectation that a large and imposing mic will deliver a large and imposing vocal sound. One solution that works: surprisingly, using the default grill style windscreen provided with the Icon Pro (also from Earthworks) on the Ethos gives the best compromise between plosives and liveliness and still sounds absolutely amazing. Sitting further away doesn't drop the quality, though I recommend choosing a better recording location than my bare-walled home office. The Earthworks ETHOS XLR is a Broadcasting condenser microphone with a Super Cardioid Polar Pattern.

It’s also been fine-tuned so that a slight presence boost between 100Hz and 900Hz, and some mild peaks and valleys between 2kHz and 20kHz brings about a much sharper and bolder sound, truly bringing out the best in your voice.

Studiocare Professional Audio Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, registration number 778381. One person’s “accurate transient capture” is another person’s “extended high‑frequency response”, so it’s no surprise that Earthworks claim a frequency response of 20Hz to 30kHz for the ETHOS.

Its 50 to 20,000Hz frequency range isn't up to par with the Ethos, but you get another fantastic foam widescreen for similar plosive prevention. Earthworks’ blazingly fast technology at the core of ETHOS ensures that every performance sounds like life. Sehr gut geeignet für Broadcastings, aber auch bei Gesangs- und Instrumentalaufnahmen macht es eine gute Figur. When we hear a recording of our voice, it doesn’t always sound familiar to us because our perception of our voice depends on time.Since November, I've been working on a huge shootout of small-diaphragm condenser mics; I might have mentioned this in my last review. In fact, you could use it pretty much anywhere you’d normally use a directional pencil mic, with the caveat that its voicing for close use means you’ll get less bottom end. Recently, I was asked to record a private concert featuring acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Paul Cantelon (who is also an accomplished violinist and composer). The simplicity and setup speed make this mic a little more versatile than a podcast-focused XLR model.

However, I found that with ETHOS, despite being a condenser microphone, which is prone to picking up a lot of background noise, it excels in noise and shock rejection. They’re designed to capture the transients with the utmost clarity, allowing the mic to sound more true to life and realistic to the source.

It’s for people who are professionals and who crave the natural sound and clarity the ETHOS is able to provide. Everything that Earthworks makes is top quality and manufactured in-house at their New England facilities. Using the mic without its foam screen does require better mic technique to avoid overpowering plosives, but the increase in purity and liveliness of the sound is worth it. The Earthworks ETHOS isn’t your average microphone, and that makes sense because Earthworks isn’t your average audio company.

I also AB'd with an SM7B and an RE-20, and compared other people's tracks to older ones they recorded with their Rode NTG-2 field mics. The ETHOS is its latest microphone and is designed to take on the heavy hitters in the broadcast world.

You can be sure that the tone of your podcast, narration, commentary, or audiobook will be unmistakably you. These always sound excellent, and in the right situations (screaming singer) they can be lifesavers!
