About this deal

The group earned critical praise for their ethereal, effects-laden sound and the soprano vocals of Fraser, whose lyrics often eschew any recognisable language.

Deciding to scale back the overly pretty sound on Blue Bell Knoll while experimenting with more accessibility the Twins ended up creating their best album since Treasure.

Coming not long after original bassist Will Heggie had departed the band, the chemistry between remaining members Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie was flourishing and by moving the band on from the starkness of their debut, they were now making the music that would help them define the decade ahead; her wordless, dreamlike vocals a powerful instrument over his lush, textured guitars their trademark. Talking of Frou Frou, I was listening to a Frou Frou album ( Details ) the other day and noticed how much it owed, not only to Bjork, but also to the Cocteau's. is simply fantastic: on "Cherry-Coloured Funk", Guthrie's inimitable guitar work chimes leading a low-key but forceful rhythm, while Raymonde's grand bass work fleshes it out.

After nearly 20 years together, the band disbanded in 1997 in part due to issues stemming from the disintegration of Fraser and Guthrie's romantic relationship. Language - Regardless of country of origin all tracks are sung in English, unless otherwise stated in our description. EDIT: I still stand by much of what I've written above, but this does sound way better through some headphones rather than speakers in my experience.Road, River and Rail' is a seriously down-beat track, almost sounding Joni Mitchell-ish, circa Hejira and then, finally, `Frou Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires', a gentle, laid-back start, reminiscent of older Cocteau, blossoming into a fairly conventional (for the Cocteau's) song, finally fading away. The reissue only scratches the surface of the sound involved in this pressing- the reissue lacks any of the passion and depth of this lp; it just sits there where this pressing surrounds you with their sound.

Her technicolor trills are as sweeping as a warm summer breeze, Robin Guthrie’s guitars and drum programming sparkle and echo as entrancingly as a hypnotist’s pendulum, and Simon Raymonde’s bass and piano are as immersive as a five-star spa’s hot tub.Fraser simply captivates; her vocals are the clearest, most direct they've ever been, purring with energy and life. Anyway, although flat and quiet sounding, this release has seriously poor quality mastering all round. You’re playing somebody a new song and twenty seconds into it they start talking—about themselves, usually. Need more time to compare but this sounds perhaps clearer than my CD, the drums are maybe slightly better better defined but my first impression is that it does sound overly shrill and exhausting at times.
