About this deal

In one game, sets of lighthouses, brochs, and farms were worth 5 points each, and this scoring condition was in window D. I originally bought Isle of Skye because it looked similar to Castles of Mad King Ludwig, a game I enjoyed a lot but had trouble getting to the table because of its over-an-hour playtime. Scrolls always score their value; however, if a scroll is in a completely enclosed landscape area (think similar to Carcassonne), then the scroll scores double. Isle of Skye, in its unassuming package, took me by surprise and is without question one of my favorite games from 2015.

In the end, the player with the best kingdom, and not the richest player, becomes the sovereign of the island. You lay them in such a way as to score victory points from the 4 randomly selected victory point criteria. In the end, the player with the best kingdom — and not the richest player — becomes the sovereign of the island. Terrain must match up, so you have to play pasture against pasture and sea against sea, just as you would in Carcasonne.Behind your screen you will assign two of the tiles a value from your own money, and mark one to be discarded. Each game is different and leads to different tactics and strategies, but having enough money is useful no matter what else is going on. You’re not just picking the next one and laying it in an optimal location – you’re bidding and bartering over tiles, and then working out how your purchases best fit into the island you’re trying to create.

Tiles must match orthogonally edge to edge with landscape (meadow to meadow, mountain to mountain, water to water), although roads need not connect. When leaving your castle, build up the Isle of Skye by adding green hills, perfect beaches and mountain ranges. It doesn't overwhelm with complexity or length, but nonetheless the beauty of the game design gives you a really good "thinky" experience in the relatively short playing time. All of these are great, and they absolutely meld together into a game that has a lot more player interaction and strategic depth than Carcassonne. Isle of Skye is a tile laying game with an auction mechanic which pits you against your opposing players to see who will finish the game with the most victory points and take the step from chieftain to king.

The monetary compensation rather ensures that the lagging players will be able to purchase a tile and possibly protect the ones they’ve drawn, making up for their stagnation in prior rounds. In Carcassonne, the tile-laying is the game–it’s what drives the action, it’s what allows players to horn in on their opponents’ gains, and each turn is marked by placing a tile, always. Everyone then places the tiles they ended up with, trying to build an island compatible with the scoring criteria set up at the beginning as well as one likely to generate sufficient income to offer fiscal flexibility in future turns. They mention that it is not too complex, it is easy for any player to pick up, and it isn't difficult to teach. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Last but not least: So far I have only played it as a 2-players' game (it can be played by 2-5 people) and I have to say it has been excellent fun, despite some reviews saying that 2-player variant is not that great. Isle of Skye is a tile placement, auction, territory building, strategy game for two to five players from Alexander Pfister and Andreas Pelikan. In step two, each player draws tree tiles from a communal bag and sets them in front of their screen. In attempting to give it a pasted on aesthetic they’ve gone for the simplest and least imaginative twee representation of a complex country. At the end of the auction phase of the game comes the tile laying phase where you can lay any tiles you have bought or have remaining in your hand unpurchased by your opponents. You can take advantage of a marketplace of positional goods where the demand is set, at least in part, by you yourself. I love that the Big Box is not that big, and I certainly would not want to pay more for stuff I know I’ll never use.
