About this deal

Last of the Summer Wine was set and filmed in and around Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, England, and centred on a trio of elderly men and their youthful misadventures; the members of the trio changed many times over the years.

I suspect it was all the wrong reasons: that is was comfortable and familiar, like a tatty pair of slippers, that they like watching David Jason, that nobody in it said fuck or was rude about the Queen. Even if each episode was 30 minutes long (some episodes are much longer) it would take you nearly a full week of non- stop viewing to watch them all! Although in its early years the series generally revolved around the exploits of the main trio, with occasional interaction with a few recurring characters, over time the cast grew to include a variety of supporting characters and by later years the series was very much an ensemble piece. All three set up fairly loose situations and then expect the three stars to carry half an hour with free-form conversation, non-sequitors, ‘Yorkshireness’ and silliness. The role of the Third Man had, by necessity, always seemed mutable, but the combination of Clegg and Compo was the bedrock of the show’s longevity.

The show had already shifted through new stars: Keith Clifford as Billy Hardcastle, a would-be survivalist who believed himself a descendant of Robin Hood, and Brian Murphy as the simple-minded Alvin Smedley. As I said, each episode had a handful of funny lines, but the overall effect was one of filling up the time with disconnected notions, easily brushed aside, and ultimately too loose to be successful. The record company sponsors a tour, with progressive band Hookfoot as Mr Bloe which means, in practice, that they start off my playing ‘Groovin’ with…’ then playing their usual set.Due to the age of the main cast, a new trio was formed during the 30th series, featuring somewhat younger actors. Make sure you get the current box set release 2017-2018+ because the box set released a few years earlier did not contain the pilot - from what I have read. Ballad for Wind Instruments and Canoe’ (warning: no wind instruments involved) is shot mainly on location. Entwistle, played by Burt Kwouk, had been a supporting character brought in to replace We

On their way to Wainwright's, the trio come across a man intending to 'end it all' because of problems with his wife. This division into male and female casts was carried over into LOTSW‘s first and only spin-off, First of the Summer Wine. The trio come across Billy Hardcastle, a man who believes he is a direct descendant of Robin Hood and takes up dressing like his "ancestor" and recruit a band of Merry Men, but when Compo sees Nora fussing over him, he decides to take matters into his own hands. The humour, especially in the exchanges between the trio, may be many degrees more abrasive than the LOTSW we remember, but this was always intended to be cosy comedy. The final episode of the show, "How Not to Cry at Weddings", was subsequently broadcast on 29 August 2010. He directed all but two episodes of the third series [6] [23] – Ray Butt directed "The Great Boarding House Bathroom Caper" and "Cheering up Gordon".

The BBC now serves part of its audience worse than it did before, because it lacks the confidence to follow its remit properly. Last of the Summer Wine: The Complete Collection [12] DVD Box Set Welcome to Holmfirth, a breathtakingly beautiful village in the heart of the Holme Valley, home to our favourite idiosyncratic retired gentlemen. Meanwhile, Howard is in trouble when Marina, on finding out that he has made enquiries about another woman, turns up at his house.

Instead, Clarke proposed that the men should all be unmarried, widowed, or divorced and either unemployed or retired, leaving them free to roam around like adolescents in the prime of their lives, unfettered and uninhibited.
