About this deal

Well, I’d really like to say that it is, but the cynic in me nags away with the nightmarish threat of a further Blu-ray release – timed to coincide with Christmas 2012’s release of the first Hobbit prequel. The Lord of the Rings: Special Extended Edition is a version of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

Every time Frodo puts on that Ring and gets sucked into the lure of Sauron's fiery eye, your whole living room will come alive with dark overtones and brooding menace. From Helm's Deep, the shire and Minas Tirith it's obvious that a lot of attention has been paid to making these films as epic and amazing as is possible. Twelve months have passed since the trilogy was first release on Blu-ray, shamefully presented in just its Theatrical Edition format, with a few throwaway extras on superfluous SD-DVD discs, and, for a whole year fans have been crying out for a decent release. Howard Shore's thematic, rousing score is pervasive throughout, reminding us of the hope and courage of the band of heroes in this film as they fight (and largely overcome) all odds, often by the skin of their teeth. The score is soaring and spacious, while dialogue is crisp and never lost, even in the midst of the chaos. where everyone talks about the relief of having finished, the premieres, and (briefly) what's to come. One highlight is a documentary on the creation of Gollum, covering every aspect of the filmmaking process that was required to bring this unforgettable character to life.

From the origins of the rings, to the splitting of a group of kindred spirits who set out to free the world, from humble beginnings to great expectations. That said, this is still a better rendition than that which was encountered for the Theatrical Blu-ray release.

The extended editions are that much longer, and you get to really sink into the characters, with more breathing room at the beginning especially.Tolkien's legacy continues with Jackson's accomplished work, a monumental three-movie event, suitable for all the family (except the very youngest) and with something to please everybody.

Next up is the section Filming Middle Earth, which has two sections: Warriors of the Third Age (21 min. Most of the commentarians have graced the previous sets — the lineups are nearly identical — giving a sense of continuity to the supplements. With the help of a courageous Fellowship of friends and allies, Frodo embarks on a perilous mission to destroy the legendary One Ring.which offers a location-by-location series of scouting trips of the places filmed in New Zealand as substitutes for middle Earth. It’s not like Fellowship suddenly looked like The Matrix; the green tone tended to be pretty light, and the movie already used a stylized palette. Here, the filmmakers discuss how they reworked the book into filming shape, and what didn't make the cut (even after filming stopped) especially a cut scene featuring Aragorn fighting Sauron — which was thought needed to give the final struggle to destroy the ring more drama, though proved unnecessary — and the absence of the long missed "Scowering of the Shire" sequence.
