Kudos to Dawn French for having her own amazing style which she so wanted to have when she started writing fiction (Do you know she is a comedian? Her narrative is strong in that without even looking at the chapter headings, you can tell that Dora is speaking. It’s terribly British with a lot of slang and cultural references that will be probably be unfamiliar to readers outside the Commonwealth yet the general gist can be interpreted.

I ask you, how was she ever supposed to make anyting of herself with that ghastly moniker as her albatross?I thought the characterisation of these characters was excelent and I ended up really caring about them. She is best-known for starring in and writing her comedy sketch show, French and Saunders, alongside her comedy partner Jennifer Saunders, and for playing the lead role of Geraldine Granger in the sitcom The Vicar of Dibley.

The storyline was in complete disarray; the storyline leading up to the 'climatic' moments were not introduced into the novel until past midway. Dora hates her mother bitterly for reasons most 17-year-olds have gotten over -- deep-seated, complex issues like not being allowed to get a navel ring. But soon she started to irritate me as she really does have the blinkers on when it comes to her family and becomes increasingly self-centred. I also found it a shame that Dawn relies on the use of modern life references such as X Factor and Facebook throughout which will surely date this book quite quickly.Der graue Alltag hat sie so sehr aufgesogen, dass kein Farbklecks mehr übrig blieb, an dem sie sich hätte erfreuen können. Whilst not seriously pretending to present a psychological analysis of family dynamics, I also found the book reaffirming in the traditional family values of reliability and dependability over the perceived attraction of infidelity and illusory excitement. There's Mo, the tired child psychiatrist mother, Dora, the Facebook obsessed 17 year old, and Peter, the precocious 16 year old obsessed with Oscar Wilde.
