About this deal

James experiences his own encounters, this time as the patient when the army sends him off to “The Butcher” to get some much-needed dental work. The vet stories are told as flashbacks, which takes some of the steam out of them, while the RAF stories never really get off the ground. Harriot is the quinetessential author who captures the essence of Yorkshire countryside through his delightful depictions of the people, landscape, and of course the animals.

As with the other 2 previous books by James Herriot I loved these tales of the people, animals and scenery of the Yorkshire area of England. The series runs: All Creatures Great and Small; All Things Bright and Beautiful; All Things Wise and Wonderful; The Lord God Made Them All. We worked with cats and dogs, of course, but with farm animals, too, and apes and monkeys and angry pet raccoons, burros, crows, macaws– the variety of pets in Los Angeles was limitless.review: All Things Wise and Wonderful is James Herriot’s third book recounting his adventures as a veterinarian in Yorkshire, England. I raised the question with Better World Books and although they could not supply a hardcover version they were extremely generous in making up for the descepency. There was simply something so magical about ACGAS, and I wasn't seeing the same thing in this book, which felt more like a collection of bittersweet essays rather than a connected story. He feels that they work well together because they are opposites, since he is more traditional, while Siegfried likes to try new methods. I felt a kinship with him and his magical world, and marveled at his talent for drawing me into his cast of characters.

Even though this realization temporarily throws him off a bit, he flies well and finds his way back to the airfield, where congratulations await him, even from his flight instructor.A comparable text in Alexander's Verses for Holy Seasons (1846) makes reference to "The poor man in his straw-roofed cottage,/The rich man in his lordly hall" and states that their prayers to God are of equal importance: "He listens, and He answers all". While this book is filled with more great tales of Herriot's life as a veterinarian, he starts each chapter with a paragraph or two about his time in the Royal Air Force. The very animals that likely added immense purpose and color to his otherwise troublesome and difficult world.

Herriot remembers a small animal vet, Granville Bennett, who always drank him under the table, back home. They all try to explain what their animal’s ailment is, with the end result that he can’t hear any of them. There’s more time with Tristian, Siegfried’s young, partier brother who always manages to get in the most terrible scrapes. I just love this book, as I do all the James Herriot books; so much so that I bought the complete BBC TV series of All Creatures Great and Small. Mount has a horse with canker, and they stable the horse for six weeks at Skeldale House, to treat him.James remembers Skeldale House in Chapter 6 with humor, and a time when Tristan was filling in for the housekeeper.

Millions of readers have delighted in the wonderful storytelling and everyday miracles of James Herriot in the over thirty years since his delightful animal stories were first introduced to the world.

More wonderful stories from James Herriot, reminiscing about the Yorkshire Dales with some amusing stories of his RAF experiences.
