About this deal

As a christian from a dysfunction family background, I have had conflict with pastoral staff that have themselves come from christian families with parents that were caring and attentive to their needs. In answering these, Christopher Clulow examines patterns of approach and avoidance, reciprocity and flexibility, caregiving, sexuality, mutual affect-regulation and other markers of secure or insecurely attached couples.

Ruptures may provide an opportunity for the therapist and patient to explore the patient's expectations in relationships and to resolve maladaptive relationship problems. The more I learn, the more significant I believe the impact is -- on our sense of self, on our ability to regulate emotions, and even on our beliefs about the world. The more we attune to both our own and our clients’ attachment patterns, the better we are able to use the richness and creativity of that relationship to enable transformation. The preoccupied attachment style predicted more therapist reports of ruptures than the other styles.

Mallinckrodt and his colleague recently published an article titled “Meta-analysis of client attachment to therapist: Associations with working alliance and client pretherapy attachment” in Psychotherapy. This is the first book that I've read that fleshes out some of the thoughts that I've been having about why therapy works and why a strong attachment relationship to a therapist Our influences include classical psychoanalytic thinkers from Freud to Winnicott and challenges to traditional approaches from authors such as Jessica Benjamin, John Bowlby, Ronald Fairbairn and Stephen Mitchell. Attachment-based psychotherapy is the framework of treating individuals with depression, anxiety, and childhood trauma. These were loss and abandonment, negative interpersonal feelings, and a need to be close and to feel cared for. As someone who is in therapy for C-PTSD, I have found myself a strange and confusing mixture of avoidant and anxious. Individuals with attachment problems may show signs of distress during difficult situations, have trouble caring for others and letting themselves be cared for, are easily angered, and have difficulty focusing. Attachment theory has revolutionized our understanding of early development, the internal world, and human relationships.

This lecture outlines the qualities of an attachment-informed psychodynamic psychotherapy, focusing on points of overlap and difference with ‘Independent’ psychoanalytic or relational approaches.Similarly, using this approach provides a tool to examine how attachment patterns may change in psychotherapy.

Why are human infants so exquisitely tuned-in to the emotional world of others and so sensitive to possible abandonment? Talking Bodies – How do we Integrate Working with the Body in Psychotherapy from an Attachment and Relational Perspective? The repair stage of the therapy aims to alter the patient's current reactions to the events that cause them emotional distress by sharing their own interpretations of the event. He proposes that mindfulness enables us to become aware of and to explore what we are doing with the patient while we’re doing it and suggests that we hold three questions in mind as we work: What am I actually doing with this patient?
