About this deal

Ben has written a wonderful book of beautiful Labrador anecdotes through history, with some actual history thrown in… but I would dearly like to attack this book with a red editing pen.

Contrastingly, I did find the book very pretentious and the subtle snide remarks to other breeds were very off putting. In many ways it is the antithesis to the modern world in which we rarely talk to strangers and don’t know our own neighbours. The son of a vet, I was surrounded by creatures great and small – parrots, rabbits, guinea-pigs, cats and, of course, plenty of dogs. Dogs also bring 'germs' into the home, Ben said which is important, particularly for children who need to build up their resistance. While visiting a sick aunt on the south coast of England the two Scotsmen accepted an invitation to shoot wildfowl at Hurn.

They were originally fishing dogs, whose ancestors came from the Portuguese cod trawlers that worked the Grand Banks off Newfoundland in Canada (despite the name, they do not actually originate from Labrador, Canada’s northerly mainland region). Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook). But perhaps her greatest coup was finding me a wife; we bumped into her while walking in the park (she had a chocolate labrador). Kind, loyal, diligent, hardworking, biddable, gentle and faithful: I may be biased, but it’s no surprise that the Labrador is by far the most popular breed in the UK and indeed the world. Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade's adorable daughter Kaavia, 5, recreates her mom's 1991 prom look: 'She definitely wore it better! It projects happiness – the tail-wagging and the overall body language project a euphoria that I find contagious. He campaigns tirelessly for conservation, the environment and animal welfare, is an ambassador for WWF, Medecins Sans Frontier and Tusk, a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the President of the Campaign for National Parks.

I shall never forget the joy and happiness on Marina and the children's faces as we sat clutching armfuls of yellow and black Labradors at the rescue centre. The writing can feel a bit lost at times, flipping from subject to subject, but I really enjoyed reading the personal stories as they reminded me of my own Labrador adventures. They feature in old stories as near-mythical water dogs, rescuers of sailors' pots, lines and nets in icy waters and blustery gales, big-hearted, eminently trainable and intelligent. They are like hairy ambassadors for the people we would like to be and this must be one reason families choose the Labrador as a role model for their children. The personal stories of Ben and Inca are unarguably the best parts of this book, hearing about his cheeky labs adventures are delightful and make you smile whilst reading. Inca, who died in 2012 having accompanied me to the island of Taransay when I was a contestant on the BBC’s Castaway programme, my wife’s dog, Maggi, and our new family puppy, Storm, have turned me into a barking crazy labrophile. We had three golden retrievers – Honey, Liberty and Lexington – my best friends throughout adolescence, my loyal confidants. One of the dogs in Robert Burns’ poem, The Twa Dogs (1786) by His hair, his size, his mouth, his lugs/Shew’d he was nane o’ Scotland’s dogs/But whelped some place far abroad,/Where sailors gang to fish for cod. However, as a small book it’s still worth reading for a Labrador loved - I particularly liked the stories about his own Labrador, Inca.
