About this deal

I didn’t know anything about Rickson before reading this book, probably because I was 7 years old when he fought his last match. I understand that nobody is perfect, but I was surprised at the sheer amount of disrespect towards their wives, the drug use, and the arrogance towards others and each other. What is striking about this book is the in-depth examination of the art of jiu-jitsu and its importance outside of the ring to personal development. That's why I bought the book "Breathe: A Life in Flow" by Rickson Gracie, which for its title I expected more. Everyone should be able to take one or two lessons from the strange and incredible life of Rickson Gracie.

At certain moments it is inspiring to learn how Rickson had overcome obstacles and his dedication and commitment to the art of Ji Jitsu. Simply put, without the Gracie family, there would be no sport of 'MMA', no 4-billion-dollar UFC empire, and no 'Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu' at strip malls all across America. If you're into martial arts or pro sports, then this is a fascinating glimpse into the mind of the greatest of all time. The memoir is candid, offering insights into not only Rickson’s path to success, but also his failings (which, not unexpectedly given his single-minded obsession with Ju Jutsu and fitness, more often involved life as an impetuous youth, as a father, and as a person – generally – than it did his life on the mat. I thought Royce Gracie was the champion of the Gracie family since the UFC was initially concocted to demonstrate the dominance the Jiu Jitsu over other martial arts, which he one prevalently.

And as an antidote to our distracting, screen-driven lives, you can’t beat the true absorption and slow grind of jiu-jitsu.Even if you are not a martial artist, you can learn a lot from reading it, and seeing the experience of a man that has experienced as much as Rickson did. Recently I've been delving into combat sports for the first time since middle school (wrestling) and I've started to take Muay Thai classes at a Gracie Jiu Jitsu place. Undefeated from the late 1970s through his final fight in the Tokyo Dome in 2000, Rickson Gracie amassed hundreds of victories in the street, on the mat, at the beach, and in the ring. Un livre bien delà du Jiu-jitsu: de la violence du Rio des années 50 en passant par la surf culture, Rickson Gracie a su perpétré la volonté paternelle et familiale par le chemin le plus droit possible. At the very least, I was hoping for maybe even some lightweight instructionals on his famous breathing and meditation techniques, but these are only mentioned as a component of the narrative.

For a discipline that involves getting sat on, sweated on, and uncomfortably entangled with another person—your knee torqued, your arm hyperextended, your carotid artery crushed in a choke hold—Brazilian jiu-jitsu elicits surprisingly cerebral comparisons: to chess, philosophy, even psychoanalysis. Rickson says nothing about racism in the jiu-jitsu world (as in the UFC, some of its biggest stars spout far-right rhetoric). The best memoirs provide both a narrative of one's life, and some re-examination and contemplation, but this mainly just focuses on the former. Not long after, he falls in love with a much younger woman (Cassia’s age is never mentioned but college age was indicated I believe). For a couple of hours each day, in a basement with leaky pipes and the heat cranked up in all seasons, jiu-jitsu demands that I focus only on the problems I’m facing right there, on the mat—or else I’ll get choked. It reminds me of how I felt after reading BJ Penn's book, an individual who lacks self awareness and has a particular level of naivete. Danaher started training, and eventually abandoned his pursuit of a doctorate to teach at the Renzo Gracie Academy in Manhattan, where he helped revolutionize the way grapplers think about leg attacks. Recent revelations of sexual abuse of women and minors by prominent instructors have drawn serious attention to the dangers of undue reverence for black belts, whose stature often shields them from censure. Indeed, the author may have managed to be in a state of "flow" in some of his fights, but not in many aspects of his life.

The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. Sparring offers brutal real-time feedback, its rhythms forcing you to bounce back from failure—if you (or your partner) “tap out,” you slap hands and start over. In particular, I enjoyed getting Rickson's perspective on the first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), in which he had an important role as Royce's trainer. Rickson Gracie, the author, has been and is an exemplar of this, and tells his stories in a stoic manner that makes enjoying the read / listen of this title, inevitable.Sidelining the dramatic throws of judo, he experimented with new ways of fighting while seated or on one’s back. After reading this, I have gained respect for Rickson as a fighter, but have unfortunately lost respect in ways for Rickson and the entire Gracie family. In the decades since, Brazilian jiu-jitsu has exploded in the United States, and not just under Gracie leadership; every day, thousands of devotees head into humid, rank basement academies across the country, hoping to … well, what are we looking for? A sound mind and body lead to a flourishing soul, Rickson despite many challenges and sad moments found atleast partial peace by being such an absolute monster on the mat. I don't remember the last time where i read a book where the author was this direct about himself and his past.
