About this deal

Male TV stars have been trying their hand at solo albums for the last few years now, with Bradley Walsh and Nick Knowles making quite the success of it. Strictly fans were impressed with Bruno’s voice last week when he performed a rendition of Frankie Valli’s hit Can’t Take My Eyes Off You. This is particularly clear with the album An Italian Romance, compiled by Bruno Tonioli of Strictly fame, who throughout the songs he chooses, suggests what Italy sounds like. To illustrate the toll the "insane" schedule took on him, Tonioli reflected on a scary moment during a live Strictly show, saying: "There was a moment in the middle of a run when I blanked. Yet what is interesting to me is the assumption of what ‘sounds Italian’ – in general, and not just to the target market. Granted, there is a marketing strategy at work here, which has informed the choice of tracks in a way that will hopefully mean that the album will sell to English audiences. The 64-year-old star – who would apparently love to duet with Adele – also insisted he is serious about music and has no plans to release a novelty record. Bruno wowed with a rendition of Frankie Valli’s Can’t Take My Eyes Off You while the professional dancers performed around him.

The 64-year-old confirmed that he wants to include new material on his album, and revealed it will have an "anthemic disco-type" feel to it – "very uplifting, where everybody can dance". Now, I’m not claiming Tonioli’s expert status here but what I think is interesting about the release of this music compilation CD (which hit the UK market at the end of November 2016 in time for Christmas – I’m not judging), is how there are certain ideas of Italy being used here to inform the choices of music included as well as the way in which the CD was to be marketed. As always with stereotypes, there is perhaps also an element of truth to the depiction (although to get all aspects together in one small photograph shows clearly how the associations we English have of Italy can quickly become stereotypical, of course! The Italian-born judge opened the programme with a rendition of Frankie Valli’s hit Can’t Take My Eyes Off You – and made quite an impression. On Christmas Day 2022, in the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special, Tonioli surprised viewers by making a guest appearance and singing " Don't Leave Me This Way" by the Communards. Since 2010, Tonioli has been in a relationship with model Jason Schanne, and the couple held a commitment ceremony in 2012. In January 2023, it was announced that Tonioli would be joining the judging panel for series 16 of the British talent show Britain's Got Talent, replacing David Walliams. I may do a song of that type so you get a feel,” he said, speaking at the premiere of the Prince of Egypt musical at London’s Dominion theatre.

In 2005, he was then chosen to be a judge on Dancing with the Stars, along with Goodman and Carrie Ann Inaba, where he, along with Inaba, has remained since. Giving an example about what he has in mind, he added: “Something like Donna Summer’s Last Dance but with a contemporary twist. During the sequence, the two celebrities swapped partners, seeing DiMarco and Keo Motsepe dance the tango in ballroom hold, with both men shirtless, and Mostsepe lift and twirl DiMarco. He said: “We never had the financial resources for me to be trained; instead I learned from watching and mimicking films. Speaking at the launch of the Prince Of Egypt musical in London, Bruno added to the tabloid that he planned to reveal a first teaser of his music in the autumn. The ‘idea’ of Italy on the cover is somewhat stereotypical, I think you’d agree: the red Vespa scooter, the sunshine through the Roman-esque colonnade, the well-groomed Mediterranean man in his sharply tailored and designer suit, collar open, and designer sunglasses in his hand. Bruno admits he could easily rush out an album, but wants to make sure his output is “at the level” of Strictly and the show’s tour.

I am pleased about that, I had my son and daughter in law visiting, she is half Italian but born in England and could not get enough of it. The thing that then was really interesting to both of us was how Battisti was marketed to UK audiences by his record label, with an explanation in the liner notes of the artist’s place in Italy, his appeal, and why then UK audiences should listen to him and appreciate him. We’re discussing it, but I’m not going to rush because it has to be done right," he tells the Mirror. He is reported to have told The Sun that he feels female singers are “stronger” performers than men at the moment. Bruno went on to say that he's looking to record new material, not just covers, and he hopes to be able to release snippets of his work this year. In 1980, as part of the group Duke and the Aces, Tonioli performed in but did not win the United Kingdom's competition to select an entry for the Eurovision Song Contest.
