We each place two small houses on spaces where three of these terrain hexes meet, as our starting settlements. Setup includes randomly placing large hexagonal tiles (each showing a resource or the desert) in a honeycomb shape and surrounding them with water tiles, some of which contain ports of exchange.

These resources can be used to expand across CATAN by creating roads or settlements; and if you don’t have the necessary resources, you can trade with your opponent.
