About this deal

May perpetual light shine upon my Auntie Bridget and my Dad and Canon McCabe, and all deceased members of Celtic Supporters Clubs throughout the world. As of the end of the 2018/19 season, their honours include being crowned Scottish champions on 50 occasions, 39 Scottish Cups and 18 Scottish League Cups.

It’s a nice story but unfortunately Celtic first used the 4 leaf in 1938, six years before the birth of the CSA and nine years before Desmond White joined the Board. This seems to have been a one off and was down to the club winning four trophies and not three as there are no other examples of the 4 leaf being used until 1938.

The Athletic aspect covered that in the original days the board likely wished to attract other events to the club as well as football to broaden the club’s mandate as well as to generate revenue (e. Celtic’s shirts did not feature a regular badge until 1977 (based on a badge that first appeared on the cover of their 50th [Golden] Jubilee Dinner menu in 1938), upon which most of their subsequent badges have been based. The Celtic Handbook from 1938 has the new badge on the front cover for the first time instead of advertising and the logo was the same on the 50th year Jubilee Dinner in the Grosvenor Hotel. It’s an important emblem of the club and the support, and one of the world’s most recognisable symbols. The emblem turned out very traditional and had just basic elements without any fancy ornaments or details. The original Celtic logo depicted a green Celtic cross (a thick shape with a ring behind the two lines.

First placed badge on each judge’s list received 60 points, second received 49, third, 48 and so on with 50th placed badge receiving 1 point. Not surprisingly for Fergus there was controversy too as he tried to get the idea off the ground that the badge should be changed to appeal to the Scottish business community and should incorporate a thistle. Considering that the club previously used a Celtic cross, the clover leaf could also stand for the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The preliminary selection was made with help from journalist and historian Rodolfo Rodrigues, author of the book Badges of Football Teams of the Entire World. None the less the removal of the badge from the article came across as rather pompous and humourless. Recent years in the Scottish league are marked by the era of Rangers revival, so the club has a hard time.

In fact stronger proof that the official badge until 1938 was the 3 leaf is seen on the back of the 1929/30 season ticket with the badge stamped proudly. The beginning of Celtic can be dated from a meeting held in the hall of St Mary’s Catholic Church in the Calton district of Glasgow. I was taken aback at the prohibition on the recent Maloney article (I think it was poor Arsely Parsley that copped it). Below images are from an advert for Admission Tickets in the Glasgow Observer dated 22nd August 1891.To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I saw a reference in The Celt fanzine some time ago to there being an earlier four leaf clover emblem used by the club.
