Deborah] Rodriguez captures place and people wholeheartedly, unveiling the faces of Afghanistan s women through a wealth of memorable characters who light up the page. There is some insight into life for women in Afghanistan and the struggle between liberal and conservative Islam, but as you might expect for what is essentially chick-lit, it is dealt with rather superficially. It also offered an insight of what it was like for those who left Afghanistan and had to adjust to life in new countries. I needed to be able to see what was supposedly happening between them, not just be told in a brief sentence of realisation. But ultimately her cozy sentimentality undercuts the elements of harsh realism, as if Maeve Binchy had written The Kite Runner. YAZMINA, a young pregnant woman stolen from her remote village and now abandoned on Kabul's violent streets.

Every character was developed and likeable, felt like you understood how this eclectic mix of people good have come together. I am a big crier with books but yet I didn't shed a tear with this book when I would have if I had cared enough about the characters. The author has described the emotions of every character so beautifully and in such detail that the entire time I imagined myself sitting in one corner of the cafe, watching them with my naked eye.

There were multiple instances where I cried and had mini heart attacks, but as they say, all is worth it if the ending is well. But personally I was so shocked by the treatment of the young girls and women, none of which I knew before I read the book, that parts of it literally gave me sleepless nights.
