DISC TWO, brings the story up to July 1981, when Dire Straits played at the Festival Park in Werchter, Belgium, while still touring and promoting their third record, the extraordinary Making Movies, released the previous October.

Given that Dire Straits had made their name by offering a smartly dressed hybrid of jazz and blues right in the middle of the new wave era, they weren't the band you'd expect to be in the vanguard of new technology a few years later. With their unique blend of rock and blues influences, Dire Straits gained international acclaim for their musical prowess. The drums and bass guitar are clear and detailed but there is a lack of drive and punch in the sound. It’s easy to imagine a band coming along, having a huge hit on the airwaves as DS did with “Sultans Of Swing,” and achieving instant fame, recognition, and wealth.

The discography of English rock band Dire Straits consists of six studio albums, three live albums, three compilation albums, two extended plays and 31 singles. The European tour included concerts in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. The older CDs all have a retrospective essay and lyrics so if you have these you will probably be keeping them!

It was a long while before the constant gigging, traveling, and recording reaped any financial reward. It was a good four years ago when the idea of a DS Live Box set was first discussed, and the idea of assembling a project of this depth was daunting, to say the least. It is very simple in approach and is one of the reasons that it has aged better than some of the bands later albums.Luckily, I had help from the archive team at Universal and British Grove engineer Luie Stylianou, who was happy to do most of the assembly and syncing. Dire Straits was later certified double platinum in both the United States and the United Kingdom by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) respectively. He played his 1938 National Style O 14 fret guitar (serial number B1844) [nb 1] on "Water of Love" and "Wild West End". Sadly, this was the only night we played that song, so I needed to rebuild the drums from a few samples.

I have a mental list of groups to make my way through and after so many years, i finally reached Dire Straits.There is not a weak track on the album - Knopfler had clearly penned an impressive collection of songs during his pre-fame years. I have an older stereo system that was meant to play records and this is a wonderful sounding record.
