About this deal

Come join the discussion about home audio/video, TVs, projectors, screens, receivers, speakers, projects, DIY’s, product reviews, accessories, classifieds, and more! This Blu-ray release of Downton Abbey: A New Era contains an audio commentary track and a handful of featurettes.

The screenplay is written by Downton creator and Academy-Award winner Julian Fellowes, with Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning Gareth Neame and Emmy Award-winning Liz Trubridge producing with Fellowes. The film will be available on those platforms starting July 5, that way you can get all of your 4th of July festivities out of the way before setting out your scones and clotted cream. Mary's practicality takes over and, Robert reluctantly concedes that Mary is in charge and should do what she thinks best. A drone shot opens the film, swooping down slowly to reveal tents set up for the Branson-Bagshaw wedding reception and then moves up to and through a stained glass window in the neighboring church to show the happy couple and the wedding guests. The initial film followed a Royal Visit to the Crawley family and Downton staff from the King and Queen of England and ended with a ball fitting for the Royal Family. The sweeping sets, gorgeous music and truly beautiful direction all play out spectacularly and make this film one that somehow betters the first entry, all while still working as a condensed season of the series.

Also on the agenda in the film is a French Villa left to the Dowager Countess from someone the family has never heard of before they learn about the Countess’s good fortune. Downton Abbey: A New Era retains the feel of what made the series special but, sometimes familiarity can breed tedium. There are also some implications to Countess Violet’s past and possible family differences that could be dire. It’s all perfectly fine but, predictable, with none of the new faces bringing anything viable to the proceedings. Downton Abbey: A New Era comes to Ultra HD Blu-ray from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment featuring 2160pHEVC encoded video and lossless Dolby Atmos/TrueHD 7.My audio/video ratings are based upon a comparative made against other high definition media/blu-ray disc. In the commentary, director Simon Curtis tends to describe scenes without behind-the-scenes details, telling us little more than what we can see on the screen. The film has a multitude of sequences containing streaming/cascading light, and mixed light dark elements, that simply look terrific.

With a screenplay by Julian Fellowes and starring the original cast alongside exciting new additions, Downton Abbey: A New Era is packed full of exuberant moments, excitement and humour, tears of joy and sadness and new beginnings for all your favourite characters. Colors are appreciably delineated with natural rendering and punchy primaries that stand out among those within the varied range used. Though the film focuses on the French villa and the filming at Downton storylines, Julian Fellowes managed to have many other stories unfold. Very much like the series Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture delivers wit, warmth, passion and an evocative feeling of nostalgia that plays perfectly to fans. Creating The Film Within The Film (4K, Dolby Vision, 9:26): A look at the vintage vehicles, clothing, cameras and microphones that make the look of the making of the fictional film look so authentic. She is shown, on her final day of filming, leaving the set as cast and crew line the path to her car and cheer her. And maybe for Mary's class that was indeed the tension and ambivalence of the age, the nature of change itself. Downton Abbey: A New Era continues the saga of the Crawley family as two unrelated events shake up the family simultaneously. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Whether at Downton or in the French Riviera, there is a gorgeous look about each set piece or location.

The film became available for streaming on Peacock however, I convinced my wife to await the arrival of the Home Video. Several shots of Highclere Castle, which stands in for Downton Abbey, are interspersed with interiors. Subtitled A New Era, something intrigued me to take a look into the world of the Crawley family, with the matriarch, the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) and her son Robert, the Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) at the lead. Suddenly awash with the starlets and production people of the roaring 1920s, the huge house has never seen so much action in its existence.

John Lunn’s music appropriately underscores scenes and is particularly effective as the Crawleys sail across the Channel to France and in a key scene involving Countess Violet. Maggie Smith is the leader of the Crawleys and often carries the best bits of the film, just by simply being. There aren’t any huge revelations here, but the feeling of comfort and goodwill radiates for the runtime.
