About this deal

Kate Eberlen has gone beyond the initial star-crossed romance of Tess and Gus to explore the lasting nature of relationships with her characteristic sensitivity, perception and humour in this inspirational book. Towards the end of the novel, emotions intensify for the reader, especially for those who have perhaps experienced cancer in their own lives. Kate skilfully upends the expectation of a happily-ever-after ending, exploring the complexities of long-term love.

In ‘Ever After’ by Kate Eberlen, readers are introduced to Gus and Tess, and a romance that intertwines throughout both of their lives, spanning years, toing and froing the both of them, almost as though the universe is undecided about where they will end up, and if they will end up together. Anna Karenina comes to mind - but this is an easier read and a kinder, warmer, more optimistic portrayal of life and humanity.

Alternating between the perspectives of Tess and Gus, the novel explores the conflicts and challenges of new love and old loyalties, passion and duty, logic and belief, with readers racing to find out if the couple can or can’t be together. When I wrote The End, I found I couldn’t stop wondering whether it would really be possible for characters with such different back stories to live happily ever after.

It was unpredictable what was going to happen with the relationship, knowing it may not be the happily ever after for the characters and that’s what had me racing through the pages and not wanting to put this down. When my mother used to read me fairy tales, I think I always focused on the ‘ever after’ instead of the ‘happily’. I’m very much a big believer in things happening for a reason, and so it didn’t take long for me to assume that fate definitely had a part to play in the eventual meeting of these two characters. Dear readers, it has been such a long time since I last wrote a book review, so if this review at any time seems a bit wobbly or loose in its structure, I do apologise. Laura Jane Williams *** Tess and Gus are strangers when their lives collide one sun-drenched morning in Florence, but it feels as if fate has brought them together.

I adored the scenery of Florence, adding even more of a colourful splash of magic to the story, and could easily picture myself alongside the characters as they strolled along sun-dappled pavements, considering their futures. If you love the dance competition, then we’ve got the perfect set of audiobooks for you to lose yourself in, from memoirs by the judges of the show – filled with brutal honesty and some startling revelations – to fiction set in the world of dance. I loved the characters and their unique bond, and how, no matter what, they always seemed to find their way back to each other. Utterly heart-warming and a joy to lose myself in, I really look forward to reading more from this author. With each chapter allowing the reader an insight into Tess and Gus’ individual lives, Eberlen provided a satisfying observation of his and hers’ thoughts and feelings, which paved the way throughout the story.

Whether your favourite dance is the Viennese waltz, the Argentine tango or a classic jive, we’ve got the book to satisfy your dancing feet. I loved the complex family relationships which Kate explores so well, as well as loss and mental illness.
