I have been enjoying broadening my book horizons over the past few years, so when I was given this short story collection in exchange for a review, I was excited by the prospect. Put simply, if you’re looking to tap into the world of science literature but don’t know where to begin, this book is the perfect pick. I live in Texas with my husband, daughter, and my dogs, who are a total mess and generally are my reading buddies. Pitting the perfect innocence and faith of little Alyosha against the brooding rationalism of his brother Ivan, this narrative finds its culmination with episodes like the parable of the Grand Inquisitor, all wrapped up in sordid infidelities and a family feud the likes of which Russia had never seen before. In one, I’m still not sure I know which part was actually supposed to be the eye opening thing that happened.The sentence structure, at times, was confusing and it pulled me out of the story more than I would have liked.

All in all, I did enjoy this collection of short stories, though I don’t think it quite hit the same standard as The Sacrifice. Perhaps the most eye-opening aspect of this young adult novel from 1981 is that it didn’t start life as an idea in the author’s head, but rather as a thought experiment in a Californian school.
