About this deal

There is pleasure in Lanchester's intelligent and measured prose, and in his rapid, seemingly expert analysis of a volatile and intriguing region. Fragrance’ might stem from the fact that the harbour waters are sweetened by fresh water from the Pearl River; alternatively, it may refer to the sweet smell of incense being sold from the shore but carried by the wind across the harbour waters. Traditional Duanwu Festival dragon-boat racing share the waters with Royal Navy warships enjoying the interwar calm.

There’s a gentle and quirky wit to his pictures: the policeman twirls his truncheon much as a child might twirl an imaginary wand; the string of helium balloons sold in the park, an outsized illustration which seems to capture the way a child might prioritize its visual scene, reaches higher than the tallest of palm trees. On a short holiday to Paris and enthralled by the city and its history, Sasek realised that distracted parents with children in tow rarely seemed to interpret the city to their off-spring, and that sketches of his surroundings he was making might best be used as illustrations for a children’s book. The first storytellers on the land on which I live are the Traditional Custodians, the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation, and I wish to acknowledge their continuing connection to the land, waters and communities of this beautiful part of the world. Named a Best Book of 2017 by NPR, Entertainment Weekly, the Los Angeles Times, BuzzFeed, Bustle, and Electric Literature, Lisa Ko's debut novel is essential reading for our times. It loses those qualities when the author is speaking in the tones of Dawn Stone, who occupies those 50 pages at the start of the book describing her first steps up the ladder of media success; she is pert and modern and rather dull. What Vaughan saw in ballet was the groupings of people, and people in movement – aspects which would stay as preoccupations and evidence themselves in much of his later work. The novel ends three years after the Mainland Chinese takeover, with Hong Kong as greedy, corrupt, and corrupting as when Stewart first landed there. A book that I would recommend and could also be read in conjunction with Gweilo, Memoirs of a Hong Kong Childhood by Martin Booth.

Dawn Stone is an English journalist who becomes the public face of money and power and big business. When she vanishes, a Triad victim, it is of more account to Stewart than to the reader, whose nerves are shredded by her awesome rectitude. In this capacity he first encountered the work of Samuel Palmer and of Blake, and Blake, particularly, was to have a life-long influence on his work. Wir verfolgen über die Jahre hinweg diverse Einzelschicksale von Menschen die in Hong Kong ihr Glück suchen. Tom Stewart leaves England just before it is hit by the Great Depression to seek his fortune, and finds it in running Hong Kong's best hotel. As a student he visited Fry’s (1910) Post-Impressionist exhibition at the Grafton Galleries, and whilst he was enthralled by the use of colour, he judged the work neglectful of content. Directly after school she noticed an advertisement in The Studio inviting applications for a training programme specialising in linocuts at The Grosvenor School of Art, London. He had his son home schooled from their house ‘Fernlea’, in Cookham, but also sent him for private drawing lessons to local artist Dorothy Bailey. Their mid-century aesthetic finds a particular resonance now with its retro-charm, and as prints, these are not only for children.Sasek wrote short, laconic sentences almost as captions or legends to attach to these illustrations, sentences the directness of which mimic the tones of an adult instructing a wide-eyed and interested child. As others have mentioned, this is an ambitious but highly readable novel, and Lanchester's writing really brings Hong Kong to life.

Rupert Shephard Rupert Norman Shephard (1909-1992) was one of the last of the group of gifted artist-teachers to emerge from the Slade in the 1920s; his contemporaries included William Coldstream, Rodrigo Moynihan, Claude Rodgers, Victor Pasmore and Carel Weight.

This is one I have been meaning to read for some time now but have never got around to it – your review suggests to me that this might have been wise! Fragrant Harbour being, unexpectedly, the sort of novel that contains plot surprises, the sort in which things neatly work out over generations, it would be wrong to reveal how the tricks work, how Stewart gets news about his nun, finds he has a family, and so on.
