About this deal

At the platform, we all took turns getting harnessed before being guided into the elevator, which was an open cage hitched up on some strong cables. Expert guides will be with you at all times, in the cable lift and on the ground in the magma chamber. Located in an ancient lava field near Reykjavik, the unique Thrihnukagigur volcano is one of just a handful of places in the world where you can literally descend into the heart of a volcano and explore its gigantic magma chamber. Based on a system used to carry window cleaners on the side of skyscrapers, we custom built our volcano lift and employ it to lower our guests into the volcano.

My favorite part of this book is when the kids find their mom and see the glowing green pearls because it got me more interested in what happens. It might take up to 30 min for our guides to reach your pick-up point, so please wait patiently for us to arrive. Wood has won several illustration awards, but the ability to illustrate a story is not necessarily related to the ability to tell a story in pictures. And more to the point, I’ve never seen a graphic novel written with a child audience in mind that was as out-and-out beautiful and gripping as this puppy here.

The Thrihnukagigur volcano is reached via an hour-long walk and entered by way of an open cable lift, a descent of 120 metres. They are sent on an expedition that takes them into an erupting volcano where they must brave the forces of nature to get out and survive.

From here, it is just a two-mile easy hike to Thrihnukagigur volcano, where you will descend into the magma chamber of the volcano. Thrihnukagigur Volcano is the only spot on earth where it’s advisable to explore a magma chamber from the inside. This is where guests are geared up and get served coffee, tea or hot chocolate and of course our famous 'all you can eat' Icelandic lamb or vegetable soup. Two brothers are pulled out of their dreary classroom in a dreary American suburban school on a dreary winter's day by their father.

To discover whether another devastating eruption might happen, the team needs to collect a lava bomb the minute it is hurled from the crater. There was some really energetic pictures of moving around the volcano, and I rarely had a clear idea of what exactly they were doing but it was fun.

Our intrepid guest and expert partner became the only people to have ever seen the world from that amazing vantage point. Following a volcanic eruption, magma chambers usually collapse, but in Thrihnukagigur, the lava drained out like water from a pipe leaving the volcano's plumbing system empty. Told through multiple viewpoints and set between the US and the UK, this is another heartfelt middle grade adventure from award-winning author Jess Butterworth.

It’s pretty to look at and the adventure can be compelling, but overall the story doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. For much of the first half Duffy is clearly the stronger, braver kid but as time goes on Sumo’s suspicions appear to be well founded. Jess spent her childhood between the UK and India, and grew up hearing stories about the Himalayas from her grandmother. It seems their Aunt Lulu has been longing for a visit from her nephews and Duffy, for one, is thrilled.
