About this deal

I read a lot of Roald Dahl and Terry Pratchett, and because I loved movies I read a lot of novel adaptations for the films I enjoyed at the time. It felt like the perfect setting for a thriller, and an opportunity to explore perspectives I’d not seen in crime fiction before.

That mix of science fiction and science fact and fast-paced action just ticked the boxes for me at that time in my life. ly/3ZvpdFq Two interviews are available this week, from Curtis Brown Creative and The Bearded Bookseller. I’d spent four years working on Dive on-and-off at that point, so it was hard not to take it personally. A tense and interesting thriller, I genuinely enjoyed the twists and turns in this well-executed novel. It’s one of the UK’s biggest crime scenes in that bodies surfacing is a daily occurrence, but it’s also used to traffic drugs and launder money, traffic people illegally and broker organs.

I also wanted to tell a story that wasn’t strictly procedural or a mystery, but something else, something people haven’t read before. Fans of Robert Bryndza, Patricia Gibney, Angela Marsons, Biba Pearce and Line of Duty, prepare to dive into your new favourite read!

I try to remember what is in my control, and ultimately, the only thing I have true sway over is the quality of the written word. Each time David pulls a new body out of the water, he fears it's his estranged fifteen-year-old daughter Lex. But there were also definitely things I fought tooth and nail for and I honestly can’t say why, except the sense of having one shot to get the book right. If you liked Luther, Line of Duty, Heat, Chinatown, No Country for Old Men, Serpico, The Long Goodbye, Welcome to the Punch or The Long Good Friday, you might enjoy this. But suddenly it becomes personal and David is afraid the next body that is brought up could be his daughter.

Jon works freelance as a reader and editor for TLC, BFI, and independent production companies with a focus on genre-led storytelling. Stephen King has a great quote in On Writing that I can relate to: “Writing is not life, but sometimes, it can be a way back to life. I was excited by the potential of this murkier world of policing that puts the Thames at the heart of the action. Dive sat dormant on my laptop until July 2019, when, following Kerry Hudson’sbrilliant one-time-only Breakthrough Festival, I was encouraged to finish. I won’t pretend I spent all 8760 hours of that time editing one manuscript, but it honestly felt like it at times. In this episode of Confessions of a Debut Novelist, I'm talking to Jon Barton about his crime novel Dive.
