About this deal

Our 4-piece Companion Sets with space-saving vertical stands to hold your poker, brush, shovel and tongs. We even have one to store kindling too. Really happy with these – as you can see in the video they just go. There’s no trouble getting a fire alight and keeping it that way – a little smoke off the bat but you get that with all charcoal bbq’s! Top tip from testing: These eco firelighters will even light damp charcoal – couldn’t believe it myself but after actually doing it I have to say, it changed the game for me. No more paper, kindling wood, and hard times getting a charcoal bbq going. I am now up and running in less than ten minutes everytime!

Opting for natural firelighters that are made from eco-friendly materials means that you can do your bit for the green cause as well as benefit from safe, non-toxic firelighters for your home.

Another thing to consider is the materials from which the firelighters are made, as many people are keen to use ones that are all-natural and eco-friendly.

years ago, I bought some tools from an older gentleman. In the box of tools was an old BIC lighter. I was going to just toss it, but tried to light it first, and it lit right up. I would estimate that this lighter was more than 20 years old by the look and style of it. It was used for several years after that and it worked well, but I didn’t have any way of knowing for sure how old it was. The oldest recorded report I found was a gentleman who had one work that was 16 years old. I found a few other reports that they were still good at 15 years. We currently have tests going to verify and test life span, but it’ll be several years before that testing is useful. Our estimation is that if stored correctly, BIC lighters should last 20-35 years or more. Simple and easy to light, the Flamers 50 Natural Stove-Barbecue BBQ Firelighters work really well. You only need one to get a good, strong fire going so they’re great value for money as well. From testing, I’ve noticed that the firelighters are very densely woven which shows how well made they are as this feature means they last longer. Some others can be too light and shed everywhere so they don’t give you as long a burn. On that note, I’m really impressed with how long these firelighters burn for – definitely enough time to get your fire really going – in a bbq starter that is raging you get only a few minutes – this is because the charcoal then fans the flame and speeds the burn process – of course this doesn’t matter as your charcoal is already alight. In tough conditions that are a little damp (what you’re no doubt far more interested in) you can realistically expect a bright strong flame anywhere from 5 to 8 minutes from my personal testing. You should steer clear of firelighters that are made with kerosene and other toxic additions, as these can result in toxic fumes being released. The biggest problem is how many firelighter bundles you need. Push all your charcoal into a pile if you don’t have a bbq starter and pile it as has as possible. This gives you the best chance of the flame filtering it’s way through and catching light to your charcoal. Here’s an example in a bbq starter of how effective these firelighters are when charcoal is piled high and there is plenty of air circulation: My bbq chimney starter in use: Eco firelighters work best when the charcoal is piled high and there is plenty of air circulation Materials are good for environment Just a word of advice here you lovely lot: we would recommend keeping your firelighters natural if possible – especially if you are cooking or grilling. Many firelighters contain chemical agents, accelerants and other things that will seriously affect the taste and chemical content of your food. For normal fires you can get away with synthetic firelighters, but why wouldn’t you want to keep things as natural as possible if you can? Great, so you’re digging the natural vibe, but what are the options out there? Hang tight as we give you the natural firelighter product low down.

The details state that they’ve been dipped in paraffin wax, which you can see as they are reasonably dense and stay together well. Just don’t crush them too much (obvious, I know but worth drawing attention to) as they will crumble slightly and could come apart. Bic lighters are advertised to be able to have up to 3000 lights per lighter. Total burn time is about one hour. Bic mini lighters burn 20 minutes. Do refillable Zippo Lighters use the same fuel as a BIC Lighters? They’re very easy to light and last a good amount of time – enough to get a good fire started! These ones also carry no chemical smell. At similar money to the natural Eco Wood Firelighters for 200 pieces, the Eco-Barn Wood Natural Firelighters XL 200 are the cheapest out of the selection in terms of how many firelighters you get for the price you pay. Like the last products, these ones light in seconds and they create a very strong, long-lasting fire with only one or two of the firelighters. They have no chemical smells, again made from natural, sustainable materials, which we love! Especially as it means they don’t leave a smell on your hands. The typical burning time for a firelighter is around 8-10 minutes. This burning time makes them ideal for a wide range of applications and uses such as stoves, BBQs, and fire pits. These firelighters are very easy and convenient to use, so you can get your fires started in next to no time.

As firelighters tend to do, these do shed slightly but that’s not a problem – you can always throw the excess shedding in the fire for more kindling. So, I’m impressed with how long these lights are for considering the price – I’ve timed it and one firelighter stayed alight for over 8 minutes (as promised on the box). You probably need between one and three to light your fire depending how big you need it to be. The gnomish firelighter is an item obtainable by completing medium Treasure Trails. It may be charged with any one colour of gnomish firelighters at a time. Like other firelighters, it also increases the chance of a log to be successfully burned, additionally giving an extra 10 Firemaking experience per log when charged. Overall, these are definitely a great option to consider for their price, I would just say that the price is slightly reflected in the quality compared to the Flamers products, for example. However, these are still very impressive and a great cheaper option. You also don’t need many to get a fire started – three or four would be fine depending on how big your fire/bbq is – also factor damp – yes these will even burn strong enough for charcoal that you’ve let get damp – somehow on my Uniflame charcoal bbq the charcoal got damp in the cupboard under the grill, and these still got the charcoal going!. So great value for money and a genuine practical product – I have done my best to state the negatives, there just aren’t many. It’s a real step up from the nasty paraffin firelighters that are white and make your hands stink! Here’s what happens when you put a few in a bundle and place a bbq starter full of big lumpwood charcoal on top in about 5 minutes:
