About this deal

If you need those last few watts and grams of performance, the Grand Prix 5000 TT TR will be the faster choice over the Grand Prix 5000 S TR. Of course, we're really interested in your opinion about the Grand Prix 5000 as well. Have you already used this tire and can comment on grip, durability, and real-life puncture resistance? Let us know in the comments. On the bike, the GP5000 S TRs feel very similar to the outgoing GP5000 TL, which is no bad thing at all.

I'm pretty sure Continental adjusted the size of the casings with the release of the GP 5000 as it makes sense with the popularity of wider rims these days. It also explains the lower specified weight of the GP 5000 range of tires. Be aware that the 28-622 GP 5000 is 25 grams lighter than the equivalent rated GP 4000 and might possibly be 2 mm smaller. It's still available from some retailers but the Grand Prix 5000 TL has been nominally replaced by the Grand Prix 5000 S TR. We'll keep these details until retailers run out.

Continental’s 5000 S TR are our benchmark for premium-price, ultimate-performance tubeless road tyres

Unlike the front tire, the rear tire stretched a bit more and now measures 32.7 mm wide on a 17C rim, inflated to 100 psi / 6.9 bars. Weight also has gone down a bit more which confirms the higher wear rate of the rear tire. This test will take a while to complete as we expect to cycle about 62 miles / 100 km per week with an update to this article every 2-3 months.

Durability is hard to assess objectively, especially in the short-term – after all, it’s hard to account for occurrences such as small bits of glass strewn across the road – but, like the GP5000 TL, the GP5000 S TR retains a dedicated puncture protection belt beneath the tread. Both the front 28-622 and rear 32-622 Grand Prix 5000 still look very good and still provide enough puncture resistance for the type of riding I do. In comparison to the first GP5000 Tubeless Ready version, the GP5000S TR is 20% faster rolling, 28% stronger in the sidewall and 50g lighter (25-622).

The tyre also features an elastomeric layer that Continental has dubbed Active Comfort. This claimed to improve vibration damping and improve comfort without affecting speed. There were no unfitted tyres to confirm the actual weights, but the tubeless version of the tyre comes with a weight penalty of roughly 85g over the clincher.

On the bike, the GP5000 S TR feels a lot like the old GP5000 TL, which is no bad thing at all. Simon von Bromley / Immediate Media Durability Chain reaction Cycles and CRC are trading names of Wiggle Ltd (In Administration) registered in the United Kingdom at 1000 Lakeside, Suite 310, Third Floor N E Wing, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO6 3EN, Grand Prix 5000 that was in storage. It's very well possible this increase of 2.0% is partly because the tire has run for an extra 20-40 km between these measurements. Out of the box and onto the scales, a 700 x 28c GP5000 S TR tyre weighs 280.6g. That’s just 0.6g above the claimed weight and 35.6g less than an equivalently sized GP5000 TL. To validate these results, it was therefore important to perform real-world testing as well. Real-world testing
