This Harry Potter themed LEGO Game plays on Hogwarts Castle. The players navigate the constantly-shifting castle layout to visit different classrooms and pass lots of magical exams. As mentioned, Lego Harry Potter follows the story of the films. Though loosely. The main occurrences, scenes and characters appear, however the mechanics inside each level linking them centre on gameplay rather than storytelling. Players will need to interact with a multitude of puzzles and in-game elements to make progress – none of which slow the game down. There are some story elements that are more skirted over, and some which are removed entirely, however, this is done for pacing and to ensure the game is family-friendly.

Well, surprisingly for me, the sheer geekery of it all actually pulled me in further, rather than pushing me away. The spell cards not only go some way to explaining what each spell does but they also have little symbolic drawings of how you would perform the actual spell (something I think even a Hogwarts professor would have benefited from whilst teaching classes). The board is fun and unique - it's structured to swing, alternating between the interior of the Hogwarts castle and outdoors, on the grounds. Rolling a passage icon with the die causes the board to flip and transfer to its alternate location. Traveling between the two is risky, as it can cost a clue - but it might also be what it takes to win the game. Collecting four clue cards for a beast makes you the hero and winner of the game. The other benefit to destroying every fibre of a room is the ease it creates. All necessary elements either respawn or act differently to destructive spells. Some change shape, others don’t react to all spells. Depending on what you need, you may not be able to interact with all optional elements if you don’t have the tools necessary. Either way, taking the remnants of the chaos and finding out its purpose is easy when everything else is broken. You could chooseto take it slow, could use some logic. But you won’t. You’ll choose violence, every time. The best thing about Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle is the fact that it not only represents a love for its subject matter and the ultimate representation of that into a game (more-so than the Lego Harry Potter video game – and that’s no mean feat) but the fact it has the ability to convert people who were maybe not even fans, into fans of the Harry Potter universe. Unusually, these microfigures have no part in the gameplay (though Dumbledore can be used in one variant) and are included mainly as a bonus. The other microfigures are generic characters, one from each of the four houses, and the set also includes an unprinted dark brown cat to represent Mrs. Norris, the companion of the school caretaker Argus Filch.
