The word-building, just like in the first book is very well done. We see various other parts of Victorian London not explored in book one in all their steampunk glory, and the author's touches to this with mechanicals, mechanimals, airships and the likes was, of course, fantastic. This is a story that does its wonderful cover justice. We follow Lily, Malkin and Robert as they try to catch a famous criminal in Victorian, steampunk London. It is all you could want from a middle-grade novel. The main characters are brave, smart and get things done. But they are also flawed, they get scared, they do stupid things, they are real… It is a book filled with puzzles and adventure. But it doesn’t focus only on adventure. It also discusses what it means to be different, what family really is, how it feels to loose someone close to you, and if love also means trust. Buatku, pada bagian Robert dan keluarganya, aku merasa nanggung. Aku terharu tapi nggak terharu, aku nggak terharu tapi cukup terharu... gimana tuh? Aku juga bingung. Ahaha. 😂 One of my favorite quotes: “If you didn't divide it up, carve things into categories, it was all one in the same anyway - waves and oceans, dawns and sunsets, noise and silence. Life was a single connected river that ran through mechanicals, people, animals, planets. What I also enjoyed about this book was the deep discussions it offered. Lily has a mechanical heart and this leads to inner conflict as she tries to determine whether she is human or not whilst subconsciously questioning what defines human. Additionally, Robert longs for a family to call his own as he misses his late father and has never met his mother who left him at infancy. The overarching theme of finding a sense of belonging was well developed in this novel. Really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next installment. We focus more on Robert who is trying to find his mother. Trying to find out what that part of him is. How she could leave him? Why she isn’t coming now that his father is dead. I think that for kids who only have one parent, who are in a similar situation, this will be very relatable. I’m glad to see that he was clearly welcomed in Lily’s family still whatever he choose to do. Lily grabbed Tolly’s hand. “Please Tolly, let me help Robert. Despite the dangers, I have to prove Papa wrong. I need to show him that I’m just as strong as anybody else.”
