About this deal

And we see Jouin, now unhappily married and with a young child, and Fiersi, who still employs the rough stuff while collecting debts for Stenheil. There are demonstrations in which people shout "Death to the Jews, outside the metics", that is to say the foreigners ". The hoofers have barely touched the dancefloor and it’s time for movie week. Costumes, wigs and song choices can do a lot of the work in the legendary themed bonanza, but there are plenty of contenders to make it as fabulous as the time Ed Balls went full green-faced Jim Carrey for a samba. Hannah Verdier Britain’s Forgotten Wars With Tony Robinson 8pm, Channel 4 This is where the modern police was born", explains the professor emeritus at the University of Burgundy. Refined, pungent, poignant, suspenseful and full of troubled characters, Paris Police 1905 is looking bigger and better, as it depicts extremes of wealth and poverty, the hypocrisy of the clergy, a broken bourgeoisie and, basically, a city in turmoil. Superb work from screenwriter Fabien Nury. Let us know what you think.

More will be heard from the campaigning woman lawyer, Jeanne Chauvin (Eugénie Derouand), with whom Jouin fell in love. And, something many fans have wished for is promised in the later episodes of Paris Police 1905. The glowering and violent former cop Joseph Fiersi (Thibault Evrard) will team up with Jouin to help him with the investigation, coming into the firing line when the case is linked to another murder. Nury: Actually a lot. In a graphic novel, you’ve got to create movement via editing and framing, a lot of great graphic novels take their cue from cinema and “Paris Police 1900” adopts a cinematic approach. What I loved about this series is that the link between the writing and direction is much stronger than in some prior experiences I’ve had. The directors – Julien Despaux, Frédéric Bakekdjian and myself – really worked together. We used the same tools: Mostly one camera, which is not very usual; Cinemascope; dolly movements, and very, very little Steadicam. The era between 1871 and 1914 was retroactively dubbed La Belle Époque (The Golden Age) after World War I. La Belle Époque gave us the Paris most of us know, from the Eiffel Tower to the Impressionists. It was a time of great cultural leaps, and also, less known, social upheaval. One thing that you must know about going into the series is The Dreyfus Affair. Factually, the affair was this: A Jewish gunner in the French army was accused of selling secrets to the Germans, who were wrestling with France over the Alsace region at the time. Dreyfus was rushed through trial, found guilty and sent to Devil’s Island. Later, the true culprit was found, yet Dreyfus was AGAIN found guilty, but the sentence was commuted. He returned to the Army, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel after fighting in WWI.

Episodes

Superb characters, meaty intrigue and politics, and clever scenes like this mark Paris Police 1905 as a cut above almost anything out there.

As her own beauty and mental health begin to fade, her beautiful young teenage daughter is starting to engender feelings of jealousy within her. And her husband, Adolphe the artist? After changes in mood and a terrible itching on his stomach, he’s diagnosed with syphilis, a deadly sexually transmitted disease that is now rampant in the capital – in both the lower classes and the parlours. It doesn't do what so many period dramas do these days - have 21st century people with 21st century attitudes in costume. Of course we can't know for sure but the people in this behave and think like people in 1905 probably did. Violence, corruption, the acceptance of gaping inequality is not criticised like we would now, it's just normal, it's accepted.

The Dreyfus Affair had a profound effect on Paris, if not French, society. It gave rise to dangerous nationalism fueled by violent anti-Semitism, most famously led by the Guérin brothers (Hubert Delattre and Anthony Paliotti), who have a major role in Paris Police 1900. The liberal upper classes, or “intellectuals”, felt Dreyfus was unfairly tried and railroaded because he was Jewish. You may hear the term “Dreyfusards” or “Anti-Dreyfusards.” The bitter societal division bled into other issues and was internationally commented upon. The revived comedy quiz has celebrities help members of the public win bounty, which these days amounts to slightly more than a chequebook and pen – although that totemic prize still exists in upgraded form. Joining Bradley Walsh tonight are Tamzin Outhwaite, Craig Revel Horwood, Ade Adepitan and Lady Leshurr. PH Simon & Garfunkel: The Harmony Game 8.55pm, BBC Two I thought this was a solid sequel. While it isn't essential to have seen 'Paris Police 1900' it certainly does help as that introduces certain key characters. The story is interesting, as are the characters. The series captures the feel of the era with some atmospheric camera work and period references; I particularly enjoyed the senior officer in his new car... pure 'Mr Toad'! The cast did an impressive job bringing the characters to life. Overall I'd certainly recommend this, especially to anybody who enjoyed the previous series. This daughter of a notary, fatherless at 16, was the second woman lawyer to be sworn in, in 1900, and the first to plead. But scratch beneath the surface and across the first 5 episodes there is no actual story development. I won't include spoilers, but many of the events that happen and which you assume will be important in the future simply aren't followed up. The acting is dry and the episodes are slow. Characters undergo trauma and then appear fully recovered shortly afterwards. Extremely unlikely friendships are formed to enable future events to happen.

Paris Police 1900” is produced by Emmanuel Daucé for Tetra Media Fiction and Nury for A.F.P.I. Varietytalked to Nury and Françoise Guyonnet, Studiocanal executive managing director of TV, in the run-up to the show’s bow:The series is also post-Noir – relating evil not to the pathology of an individual but far broader social malaise…. One hallmark of “Paris Police 1900” is the pervasive violence of a supposedly Belle Epoque. Can you comment? Antoine Jouin is based on Louis-François Jouin, who was a real investigator at the time. How do you prepare for this role? During this period, the newspapers “developed like never before”, observes for his part the historian of the police force Jean-Marc Berlière **.
