About this deal

High school senior Billy Lynch lives with his protective aunt Cheryl, who has raised him since infancy after his parents died in a car accident. A gifted basketball player, Billy is offered a chance at a scholarship to attend the University of Denver, but Cheryl dismisses the idea, assuming that Billy will stay with her to "contribute". At school, Billy is bullied by one of his basketball teammates, Eddie, who is jealous of Billy's close camaraderie with their coach, Tom Landers; meanwhile Julia, the school newspaper photographer, begins to take a romantic interest in Billy.

And Bo Svenson is evil on skates. The script doesn't give him that much to work with, but he rolls right over that little obstacle. WHY does he rant, "I want those deviants off the streets!" Who knows, who cares? There's a story out on the Net that he was a royal pain on the set, and I could easily believe that this was a case of him getting to say things he's always wanted to say in public, and get paid for it. Solid direction and atmosphere are abundant, while the performances really bring the script to life. Susan Tyrrell is fantastic as the overbearing, sexually-repressed aunt, and Jimmy McNicol plays the "normal teenager" impressively. Bo Svenson is appropriately repugnant as the homophobic and misguided police detective. For the most part the performances are good. As I said, Tyrrell is just something else. Svenson is excellent in his role as he plays the part extremely tough and unlikeable. You've got a nice performance by Julia Duffy as the girlfriend and McNichol is good in his role as the adult Billy. Britt Leach adds good support as does Steve Eastin. You'll also notice Bill Paxton in an early role. That being said, I say if Leah Voysey does not return as the Clown Café host and we don’t get an Art-themed Christmas song, we should riot.) Fan Disservice: Cheryl is very attractive and bares her breasts in one scene, but it's when she's stabbing a guy to death.

Reasonable Authority Figure: Coach Landers. He's shown to be a great coach that Billy looks up to, and the one person that Billy calls after he murders Cheryl in self-defense. Unfortunately, he's unfairly targeted by Det. Carlson because of his homosexuality and relationship with Phil Brody, resulting in his resignation from high school. Before credits roll, a brief narrative explains that Bill stood trial for Carlson's death, but was unanimously acquitted due to “temporary insanity.” It also states that Billy and Julie are attending college together. Ultimately, BBNM is concerned with the concept of agency, and that is why this movie is a fantastic fixture in the Horror genre. Aunt Cheryl tries to strip Billy of his agency when he decides he wants to move away and start his adult life without her. The abuse and manipulation she uses on Billy are designed to strip him of his power and make him feel like he has no choice but to obey.

NIGHTMARE MAKER is one of the better films that were singled out for prosecution in the UK in the early 80’s and lumbered with the tag ‘video-nasty’. I remember first encountering Dumplings during a time in high school when I had gotten into that genre of YouTube video that talked about “disturbing films”, something I’ve derided in previous articles on Horror Press; I stand by the opinion that 9 times out of 10, you will be disappointed when you see a film on those lists. And Dumplings , ultimately, is a very grotesque film that is undoubtedly disturbing, but it’d be a reductive descriptor. Because it’s freaky, bloody, and sometimes psychosexual expression is not so secretly a piece of political counterculture created by a Hong Kong visionary: Fruit Chan.

Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker is worth seeing for Tyrell's delightfully unhinged performance alone! Overall, it's a really entertaining mix of over-the-top histrionics, melodrama and horror movie tropes that results in something pretty unique in genre cinema. Code Red's Blu-ray release presents the film in a decent presentation and carries over all of the extras from the previous release, resulting in a pretty solid effort. Recommended. Analysis and themes [ edit ] Malignant motherhood [ edit ] The film borrows themes and structures from Oedipus the King, specifically regarding adoption and mother-son incest After months of relative promotional silence, a limited re-release of Terrifier 2 in theatres across America on November 1st gave us a sneak peek of director Damien Leone’s next big film. That teaser trailer is now available to watch online here:
